URGENT NOTIFICATION of Legacy Rubber Insulating Gloves Transition to Electriflex™ |
|
 |
|
In 2014, Honeywell Salisbury
launched Electriflex™ Gloves in order to offer lineman and other
users improved flexibility without compromising safety, and market acceptance
has risen greatly over the last 3+ years. According to Honeywell Salisbury
data, Electriflex is 30% more flexible than legacy Salisbury gloves, and they
are 82% preferred by linemen compared to legacy Salisbury gloves.
With this high rate of
market acceptance and preference, Honeywell Salisbury has officially announced
a transition to Electriflex and the discontinuation of legacy rubber gloves and
mittens. This full transition affects legacy class 2, 3, and 4 high
voltage gloves and mittens (all colors, sizes, and cuff styles).
As the world’s largest
stocking distributor of Salisbury gloves, Saf-T-Gard is in the position to help
our customers manage this transition as smoothly as possible. While
Saf-T-Gard has a strong inventory position on the legacy product, Salisbury is
limiting new production orders. Therefore, ongoing availability is limited, and
Salisbury will soon cease production of legacy gloves altogether.
Saf-T-Gard has integrated
limited styles of the premium Electriflex product into our inventory, and
additionally, we have placed significant orders to continue to increase our
stock position.
Manufacturer discontinuations
can be challenging, but by continuing to partner with Saf-T-Gard you are
working with the market leader. The full Saf-T-Gard team is prepared to discuss
the options available with you to manage your specific situation.
Please contact any of us at 1-800-548-GARD

Vendor Product Spotlight: Honeywell Miller 9099X/12 Relief Step™ Safety Device |
|
 |
|
The Miller Relief Step™ Safety Device
alleviates the effects of orthostatic intolerance, also known as suspension
trauma. If a fall occurs, a person becomes suspended in a harness and remains
both vertical and sedentary for a period of time, causing blood to ‘pool’ in
the veins of the legs. Subsequently, blood flow is restricted to the brain and
other major organs that may initially result in unconsciousness. If not rescued
promptly, serious injury or death may occur. The Miller Relief Step is designed
to provide a short-term solution in preventing suspension trauma. Additional
features and benefits include the following:
- After a fall, provides ability to move and flex leg
muscles, improving circulation
- Alleviates the effects of orthostatic intolerance
or suspension trauma
- For greater comfort, use two of the devices, one
for each leg
- Simply pull tab to deploy and insert foot into loop
- Attaches to any full-body harness
- Reduces fall clearance requirements
- Extremely lightweight and compact
- Comparable to a shock-absorbing lanyard
- High-impact nylon housing and abrasion-resistant
webbing provide long service life
- Maximum load of the safety device is 400 lb. (includes
the weight of the user and their equipment)
- Black/orange color
- One size only

|
Each year June 1–7 is
recognized as National CPR and AED Awareness week. This annual event, sponsored
by the American Heart Association (AHA) with the American Red Cross and the
National Safety Council, aims to foster awareness and emphasize how
high-quality CPR with the use of an AED can save more lives. The event also

The AHA reports that each
year more than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United
States. Approximately 50% of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) victims require
defibrillation; all require CPR. If you perform CPR immediately and use an AED

of survival according to the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation website.
Whether you already have an AED or are looking to purchase one for the first time, Saf-T-Gard can help you revive your first aid program with the latest AED technology. Additionally, you can receive up to $600.00* when you trade in your old AED model for the ZOLL AED Plus® at Saf-T-Gard

Hazardous Chemical Safety Guide
|
|

|
|
Hundreds of industries use chemicals at some point
during their production and service processes. Some of these chemical uses are
obvious – massive amounts of chemicals are used in plastic and rubber
production and to refine oil and natural gas. But even industries that use only
moderate amounts of chemicals need safe handling processes and secure storage options. We've put together some helpful educational information all in
one place. Click here to view, and let
Saf-T-Gard know how we can help you.

Q&A
|
 |
|
 |
|
Question - What is the difference
between medical or medical-grade disposable exam gloves and non-medical or
industrial-grade disposable gloves?
Answer - Disposable gloves made of natural
latex, nitrile, vinyl or other synthetic materials are classified according to
their quality level (AQL by statistical sampling for defects found). If
the word "exam" or "examination" glove appears in the
product packaging to describe the gloves, they must meet the requirements of
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for patient examination
gloves. The FDA minimum AQL is 2.5. Sampled shipments with a higher
level of defects are rejected and cannot be sold as medical or medical-grade
exam gloves. The FDA recommends that exam gloves also meet applicable
ASTM standard specifications which cover thickness, length, size and other
attributes. There are other regulatory requirements for medical or
medical-grade exam gloves as well including the filing of FDA pre-market notification
forms [510(k)], registration of the manufacturer or importer as an FDA medical
device establishment, random inspections of manufacturing facilities and
random sampling of shipments of imported gloves. Non-medical or
industrial grade disposable gloves are generally manufactured as medical gloves
but were identified and segregated during post-production testing as having a
higher AQL meaning a higher level of defects. There are no minimum AQL
requirements for non-medical disposable gloves. [ed. note Ambi-Gard®
brand exam gloves are manufactured, sampled, and tested to a higher AQL than
the FDA minimum and Ambi-Gard non-medical disposable gloves are also sampled
and tested to a specific AQL level to assure consistent quality.]

What is OSHA's position regarding the required "quiet time"
before audiometric testing is done? Can an employee's audiometric testing
be conducted after the employee has worked a full-shift in a noisy environment and was wearing hearing protection?
The Occupational Noise standard at 29 CFR 1910.95(g)(5)(iii) states that
testing to establish a baseline must immediately be preceded by fourteen (14)
hours without workplace noise. There is no requirement for fourteen (14) hours
without exposure to workplace noise for annual audiograms as there is for
baseline audiograms.
However, please be aware that a temporary threshold shift (TTS) could
possibly contaminate an annual audiogram if an employee was exposed to noise
prior to taking the audiogram. It is this audiogram which is compared to the
baseline audiogram to determine whether a Standard Threshold Shift (STS) has
occurred. The audiologist, otolaryngologist or physician cannot override this
STS determination simply because of possible TTS contamination. Only a retest
audiogram, taken within 30 days of the annual audiogram, can be used to replace
the annual audiogram and the STS determination.
An employer may substitute the use of hearing protection when the
fourteen hours of quiet time cannot be met. If TTS contamination is a problem,
the retest audiogram should be preceded by 14 hours free from workplace noise,
(but this is not required by the standard). If no retest is done, the annual
audiogram and its STS determination are conclusive, and the follow-up
procedures and written notification of the STS determination to the employee
must be done.

As I See It |
|

|
|
It is June 2018, almost mid-year. So what is so
important about the year? When, in our industrial safety world, we have product
specifications and test methods developed by industry consensus groups like
ASTM and ISEA and IEC. In the US, most or all such specifications are also
designated as ANSI or American National Standards. So back to the question –
what about the year? Such documents (which are usually referenced in OSHA
regulations) must be reviewed on a periodic basis, generally every 5 years or
so. This ensures that product specifications and test methods do not become
stale and can incorporate new developments and new technology. So what does
this mean to you and your workers? Using the example of hand protection, the
first ANSI/ISEA-105 American National
Standard for Hand Protection Criteria was published in 2000 as a user
guide. It was subsequently updated, as required, in 2005 and 2011. This
document was significantly updated in 2016 and renamed American National Standard for Hand Protection Classification, reflecting
a desire of users and suppliers for more quantitative classifications covering
a wider range of performance criteria. As members of ISEA and ASTM, we remain
significantly and often passionately involved in the continuous development of
the standards and test methods that cover the products we supply for the
protection of your workers and the safety of your workplace. That is our
commitment to you, because we are Saf-T-Gard International - Bringing
Workers Home Safely Since 1936.
