Saf-T-Gard International, Inc. Donates Thousands in Personal Protective Equipment to Local Habitat for Humanity Home Construction Program and ReStore
|
|
|
|
Saf-T-Gard International,
Inc., a full-line, quality-oriented global industrial safety solutions supplier,
is helping families realize the dream of owning a home by recently donating several
thousand dollars’ worth in safety products to the Habitat for Humanity of
Northern Fox Valley and its Elgin ReStore. Habitat Construction Managers and
homeowners alike can rest assured in knowing that their sweat equity is protected
and that the costs to ensure that the Habitat fulfills its mission with
excellence are covered.
Every day, more and more
families find themselves in a struggle to keep a decent roof over their heads.
Caught in the punishing cycles of unpredictable rent increases, overcrowded
conditions, or lack of access to land and affordable financing, these families
live with a constant burden of uncertainty, stress and fear. Habitat for
Humanity knows that safe, decent and affordable shelter plays an absolutely
critical role in helping families create a new cycle. That’s why Habitat for
Humanity partners with people in local communities and all over the world to
help them build or improve a place to call home. It is through donations such
as this one from Saf‑T‑Gard that give families hope and peace of mind by empowering
the Habitat for Humanity to continue their work in nearly 1,400 communities
across the United States and approximately 70 countries around the world.
Habitat ReStores are unique home
improvement stores that accept small and large donations of new or gently‑used furniture,
appliances, housewares, building materials and more. The items that they sell
are available to the public at a fraction of the price. However, Habitat
ReStores are more than just resell stores. The purpose of Habitat ReStores is to
contribute to the work of Habitat for Humanity. The Habitat ReStores assist in
funding Habitat for Humanity’s mission to end substandard housing by building strength,
stability and self‑reliance through shelter. Moreover, by accepting
hard-to-dispose of items, Habitat ReStores have successfully diverted more than
10,000 tons of materials from landfills. Since opening in 2006, the Habitat for
Humanity Elgin ReStore has raised enough funds to construct 68 homes.
“Safety and shelter are
basic human needs, so we are very excited to contribute to an organization such
as Habitat for Humanity that can help fulfill both,” said Richard Rivkin,
President and CEO, Saf-T-Gard International, Inc. “Saf-T-Gard has been bringing
workers home safely since 1936 with our comprehensive selection of superior
safety products, and as a family-owned and family-operated company, we are
proud to now also enable families to have a place to come home to safely.”

Introducing the New Accuform Duck Armor™ Liquid Laminate |
|
 |
|
Duck Armor™ is powerful enough to
survive in any environment. Pioneered by Accuform more than a decade ago, the
scientifically strong liquid laminate coating sleeps with one eye open to
protect over 90,000 identification product SKUs including signs, Digi-Day®
3 Scoreboards and Store-Boards™ from virtually any hazard. Durable and
resilient, yet light as a feather, Duck Armor has you covered!
Longevity Means Quality Ink and
Materials – Protected by Duck Armor Liquid Laminate!
A sign that lasts starts with a quality base
material. For example, an industry-tested material like Accuform’s Polyethylene
(Plastic) versus a typical competitor material like “Rigid Plastic” (a.k.a.Styrene).
The wrong base material can effectively negate what sits on top of your sign.
What sits on top? A safety message that leads your workforce to safety. That
message simply can’t fade.
Longevity through quality also means scientifically
engineered ink-sets specifically created for the materials they will be printed
on. Not every Accuform material requires “a free top-coating” – Accuform's inks stick and
never flake-off.
That’s the difference, driven by facts
and supported by science. See the results for yourself. When Duck Armor is
needed, Duck Armor is there.
Additional features and benefits include the
following:
- Applied to the surface, Duck Armor bonds and dries instantly
to defend your messages against the toughest environments
- The printed surface is fully encapsulated, suitable
for interior and exterior sign application
- The veracity of the print color is considerably
improved due to the UV inhibitors, therefore extending product life
- Shows NO discoloration or adhesion failure after 24
hour immersion in more than 20 different chemicals
- Duck Armor Liquid Laminate is graffiti-resistant to eliminate vandalism concerns, scratches, and much more
- Surface cleans easily with alcohol-based common
cleaners

Q&A
|
 |
|
 |
|
Question - What personal protective equipment
(PPE) is required to be in compliance with the requirements for working within
the minimum approach distances (MADs) of underground pad-mount transformers?
Are both insulating gloves and insulating sleeves required?
Answer - The requirements for working
within the MADs of underground lines and transformers are the same as when
working within the MADs of overhead lines. Paragraph 1910.269(l) addresses
working on or near exposed energized parts; it is not limited to overhead
lines. This paragraph does not differentiate based on nature of the component
(line versus equipment), nor does it differentiate on the basis of the location
of the energized part (overhead versus underground). Therefore, the
requirements found in 1910.269(l) apply regardless of the location or nature of
the exposed energized part(s), including those that require electrical
protective equipment.
Regarding the question on the use of gloves and
sleeves, 1910.269(l)(2)(i) allows for employees to work within the MADs of
energized parts if they are wearing insulating gloves and insulating sleeves in
accordance with 1910.269(l)(3). Paragraph 1910.269(l)(3) requires that, if
employees are insulated from the energized parts through the use of insulating
gloves, then insulating sleeves are also required with two exceptions. There
are two conditions noted in 1910.269(l)(3)(i) and 1910.269(l)(3)(ii) that would
allow an employee to use insulating gloves without the use of insulating
sleeves: 1) If exposed energized parts on which work is not being performed are
insulated from the employee; and 2) If such insulation is placed from a
position not exposing the employee's upper arm to contact with other energized
parts.

What are the requirements to give workers a choice
of hearing protection devices?
OSHA regulations, 29 CFR
1910.95(i)(3), states: "Employees shall be given the opportunity to select
their hearing protectors from a variety of suitable hearing protectors provided
by the employer." In this instance, OSHA did not intend to specify the
number of types or variety of hearing protectors from which employees may make
their selection. Instead OSHA included this performance language recognizing
that there be several reasons why employees should be allowed to select from a
variety of hearing protectors.
Plant conditions such as dust,
temperature, and humidity can cause one type of protector to be more suitable
than another. For example, earplugs can be more comfortable in a hot, humid
environment, than earmuffs. Also, individual ear canals come in all shapes and
sizes. For people with unusually- shaped ear canals, fitting may be difficult,
and commonly-used insert protectors may be very uncomfortable.
In general, employers are
advised to give workers a choice between at least one type of earplug and one
type of muff since individuals may be more comfortable in one type of
protection than in the other. However, the number of different hearing
protectors required to constitute an adequate variety is simply the number
needed to supply each employee that requires a hearing protector a suitable
one. The term "suitable hearing protectors" as used in the provision
means protectors that are comfortable to wear and that offer sufficient
attenuation to prevent hearing loss.

As I See It |
|

|
|
It is May 2018. There’s a plaque on display at the entrance to
our office. It has the Rotary International emblem and these words:
The
Four-Way Test of the Things We Think, Say or Do:
1.
Is it the TRUTH?
2.
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3.
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4.
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Here’s the interesting history of that simple statement. More
than 80 years ago, in the midst of the Great Depression, a U.S. Rotarian
devised a simple, four-part ethical guideline that helped him rescue a
beleaguered business. Herbert Taylor, the author, was asked to help revive the
near-bankrupt Club Aluminum Company of Chicago. Looking for a way to
resuscitate the company and caught in the Depression’s doldrums, Herb thought
about an ethical guideline for the company. The Test gradually became a guide
for every aspect of the business, creating a climate of trust and goodwill
among dealers, customers and employees. It became part of the corporate
culture, and eventually helped improve Club Aluminum’s reputation and finances.
The statement and the principles it embodied also helped many others find their
own ethical compass. Soon embraced and popularized by Rotary International, The
Four-Way Test today stands as one of the organization’s hallmarks. The Four-Way
Test is said at every meeting of 35,000 Rotary Clubs worldwide. I personally
find The Four-Way Test meaningful, important and relevant as a guide to our
personal and business relationships, and I hope that you feel the same way. We’re
proud of our reputation, heritage, and integrity because
we are Saf-T-Gard International - Bringing Workers Home Safely Since 1936.
