Up Your Safety Game at the International Lineman's Rodeo with Sqwincher and Voltgard and Enter for Your Chance to Win FREE PRIMOS Hunting Gear!

Exposure to high voltages and challenging weather conditions such as rain and high temperatures are two of the most common occupational hazards that utility workers must face at any given moment. While it is nearly impossible to eliminate the source of these threats, it is ALWAYS possible to control them with the proper safety equipment.

Saf-T-Gard International, Inc. is a global manufacturer, supplier, importer and exporter of industrial safety products and a proud distributor of Sqwincher hydration solutions. Specifically designed for industry, Sqwincher is an economical, effective method for reducing the rate of heat-stress-induced injuries while improving performance and productivity. Scientifically-formulated, Sqwincher electrolyte replacement drinks restore important mineral salts and fluids lost through dehydration, physical exertion and heat stress and are absorbed into the body significantly faster than water alone. Sqwincher also contains twice the potassium and half the sodium compared to other sports drinks. It is available in ZERO sugar, ZERO calorie or in naturally-sweetened and no-added-color LITE alternatives, which makes Sqwincher an all-around healthier selection! Saf-T-Gard offers Sqwincher Instant Powder or Liquid Concentrate configurations in a variety of flavors and packaging and dispensing options. Moreover, the new Sqwincher Double Cooler is the only cooler in the industry to properly dispense the beverages as formulated – dual serve, sanitary, no dilution, and no contamination. It is the preferred cooler for bucket trucks!

Furthermore, Saf-T-Gard also manufacturers its own Voltgard® line of electrical safety products, including the Voltgard Water-Repellent Grain Cowhide Leather Protectors. These Voltgard Leather Protectors are the ideal choice for linemen, because their protective properties are not sacrificed when wet, and linemen work in all kinds of weather including the rain. Crafted by leather glove specialists, the Voltgard Leather Protectors fit properly over all industry-standard rubber insulating gloves and are available in a variety of styles to accommodate all of your electrical safety hand protection needs. They meet ASTM Standard F696 for construction, design and materials used. Voltgard Leather Protectors are available in a full range of low- and high-voltage styles and are the best protectors you will ever wear!

Visit with Voltgard, a division of Saf-T-Gard International, Inc. and Sqwincher at the International Lineman’s Rodeo (booths 100A and 100B) to learn more about Voltgard and Sqwincher products, take advantage of the FREE Sqwincher Double Cooler promo when you purchase 5 cases of Sqwincher 2.5 Gallon Yield Zero Powder, and enter for your chance to win either a FREE PRIMOS Double Bull Bullpen or a Bullet Proof 2 Game Camera worth a combined value of $436.90. Saf-T-Gard Offers West Chester Gloves That Meet the New ANSI/ISEA 105-2016 Standards

When it comes to the new ANSI testing standards, West Chester Gloves make the cut! In early 2016, the ISEA released its new ANSI/ISEA 105-2016 hand protection classification that expanded the levels of cut resistance from a 5- to a 9-level scale. The new standards now separate category 4 into three more narrowly-graduated levels. They also expand the upper level on cut resistance that allows users to make distinctions that didn't previously exist. Saf-T-Gard strives to deliver the right level of protection for the job, and that is why we proudly offer a full line of West Chester Cut-Resistant Gloves - all of which are tested using the new 2016 standards! Click here to check out our selection online, and call us at 1-800-548-GARD (4273) with any questions or to learn about the additional styles we have available.

How to Choose the Right Lineman Glove Size

ASTM D120 section 8.2 provides the measurements of the diameter of the palm for manufacturers, measured at the midpoint of the palm, plus or minus ½”.

The first step is to measure the palm's circumference by using a cloth measuring tape. Measure your hand by wrapping the tape all the way around your palm, and round the result up to the nearest whole

inch to equate to the probable size of glove to select. Allow for extra room if fabric glove liners are to be worn, especially with thermal liners.

Keep in mind that this measurement is an approximation and can vary depending on your hand and finger shape. Personal preference for tightness and finger length will ultimately determine the size that you are most comfortable wearing. The best-fitting glove might be up to a half or a full size bigger (or smaller) than the measurement.

Two New Fact Sheets Explain the Importance of Analysis in Creating Safer Work Practices

OSHA has released two fact sheets that stress the importance of tracking metrics and investigating potential hazards to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities. The Use of Metrics in Process Safety Management Facilities provides employers with a list metrics, or measurements, tracked by facilities in OSHA's Voluntary Protection Programs that handle highly hazardous chemicals. OSHA and the Environmental Protection Agency collaborated on The Importance of Root Cause Analysis During Incident Investigation, which urges employers to investigate incidents that nearly led to a worker injury and find ways to prevent similar incidents.

Safety Tips

1. CUT IT OUT - According to OSHA, hand and finger accidents rank highest in preventable injuries

2. CUT IT OUT - ANSI/ISEA 105 (USA) and EN388 (Europe) have test methods and ratings to measure the cut resistance of industrial hand protection

3. CUT IT OUT - Kevlar®, Spectra® and Dyneema® are excellent cut-resistant man-made fibers that can be used to manufacture gloves

4. CUT IT OUT - The cut-resistant properties of Kevlar, Spectra and Dyneema gloves can be reinforced with coatings such as rubber, nitrile, and polyurethane

5. CUT IT OUT - The ultimate cut-resistant gloves are made from metal mesh (like chain mail)

Q&A

Question – “Does OSHA mandate that all volunteer members of a HAZMAT team be required to participate in medical surveillance, or may an employee opt out of medical surveillance?”

Answer - Medical surveillance requirements for personnel involved in emergency response to the release of hazardous substances, i.e., HAZMAT team members, are set forth in 1910.120(q)(9). Paragraph 1910.120(q)(9)(i) provides: "Members of an organized and designated HAZMAT team and hazardous materials specialists shall receive a baseline physical examination and be provided with medical surveillance as required in paragraph 1910.120(f) of this section." Therefore, HAZMAT team members involved in emergency response operations covered by 1910.120(q)(9)(i) must receive a baseline physical exam. Any employee subject to 1910.120(q)(9) who elects not to have a baseline examination may not perform emergency response duties as part of a HAZMAT team or as a hazardous materials specialist. An employee who is a "volunteer" member of a HAZMAT team or hazardous materials specialist must still receive the baseline examination under paragraph 1910.120(q)(9)(i). That paragraph applies to all members of any organized and designated HAZMAT team. Any employee who is expected to respond to hazardous substance releases as a HAZMAT team member with the knowledge of the employer is covered under the requirements.

Factoid

May gasoline be dispensed from a five-gallon UL- approved safety can into the fuel tank of a tool such as a target saw, weed-eater, or 5-kw generator during a construction job?

The general requirements for the handling and use of flammable and combustible liquids such as gasoline are set forth in 29 CFR 1926.152(a):

(1) Only approved containers and portable tanks shall be used for storage and handling of flammable and combustible liquids. Approved safety cans or Department of Transportation approved containers shall be used for the handling and use of flammable liquids in quantities of 5 gallons or less...

29 CFR 1926.155(l) defines a safety can as:

An approved closed container, of not more than 5 gallons capacity, having a flash arresting screen, spring-closing lid and spout cover and so designed that it will safely relieve internal pressure when subjected to fire exposure.

29 CFR 1926.155(a) defines "approved" as:

(a) Approved, for the purpose of this subpart, means equipment that has been listed or approved by a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as Factory Mutual Engineering Corp., or Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc., or Federal agencies such as Bureau of Mines or U.S. Coast Guard, which issue approvals for such equipment.

In the background to OSHA Instruction STD 3-4.1A (De Minimis for Absence of a Flame Arrestor Screen in a Safety Can), OSHA noted that while most safety cans approved by listed agencies or organizations have flame-arrestor screens in safety can spouts, Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc. does not require them for approval of safety cans. Instruction STD 3-4.1A provided:

A. Purpose. This instruction establishes that the absence of a flame-arrestor screen in the pouring or spout of a safety can is treated as de minimis.

When handling or using flammable or combustible liquids, the use of an Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc. safety can without a flame-arrestor screen is treated as a de minimis violation.

As I See It

It is October 2016. Those safety products that you and your workers are using now – how did they get there? Eighty years ago when our company was founded, a significant percentage of the work gloves used in general industry were purchased at the local hardware store because workers chose their own based on personal preferences. Standards were virtually non-existent. Cotton work gloves were made from the cheapest woven fabrics available, and leather gloves were often made from inner layers, or splits, of the hide – generally not usable for anything else of value. How far we have come! The most important channel for distribution of industrial safety products is the professional safety products supplier who brings knowledge, experience, and expertise as the value-add proposition. Sure, we confess that other channels exist, but do you really want to rely on the guy in the orange apron to recommend an air-purifying respirator, or rely on a slick webstore under the false assumption that if it’s good enough to shop there for light bulbs or electronics or housewares, then it must be good enough for life-saving safety products? But there’s more to the value proposition than just identifying the optimal distribution channel. The true payoff comes in recognizing that the professional safety distributor (example – Saf-T-Gard!) invests significant resources in product knowledge, training, understanding of regulatory compliance, back-end and fulfillment systems, and inventory to be a true partner delivering value, products, and services in a cost-effective manner.
