Introducing the Voltgard® Two Pocket Glove and Protector Combo Bag |
OSHA, NFPA and the ASTM standards mandate the use of rubber insulating products when even the smallest probability of contact (with 50 volts AC or higher) exists. These rules affect nearly all industrial workplaces, as every single facility (not just utilities, electrical contractors, telecom companies, municipalities and electrical co-ops) has a need for electrical safety, and failure to comply can result in heavy fines, serious injury and even death.
Do not forget that, with very few exceptions, rubber insulating gloves must always be worn with leather protector gloves manufactured in compliance with ASTM standard specification F696. Leather protector gloves themselves offer no protection against high or low voltages but are intended to be worn over rubber insulating gloves to protect them from cuts, abrasions and punctures. Proper storage extends the service life of the rubber insulating equipment. When not in use, store rubber goods in a suitable container such as a canvas bag designed specifically for that purpose.
The Voltgard® Two Pocket Glove and Protector Combo Bags simplify the storage and transport of your rubber insulating gloves and leather protectors for continued safety and compliance. Various styles are available to fit different sizes of rubber insulating gloves, including the following: |

The New Honeywell Salisbury PrismShield™ Plus Offers Improved Visibility, Color Recognition and Comfort |
Honeywell recently introduced the new PrismShield™ Plus to help keep workers protected in arc flash environments and to provide improved visibility compared to existing face shields. Head and face protection is a critical component of arc flash safety. Building upon Honeywell’s PrismShield™ technology, the PrismShield™ Plus offers an improved line of site, enhances color recognition and heightens worker comfort.
As a Safety Manager you’re already fully aware that workers need to correctly distinguish colors through their arc flash face shield. PrismShield™ Plus provides full color recognition, making sure your workers can differentiate between similarly colored objects at all times. It also increases general visibility, especially when working indoors in poorly lit rooms. The anti-scratch and anti-fog coatings are a guarantee for lens longevity, and the exclusive weight-balancing frame elevates comfort by reducing neck strain for users.
Arc Flash is a dangerous condition associated with the release of massive amounts of energy produced by an electrical arc. Arc flashes can be generated by various conditions including mechanical breakdowns or failure of electrical circuits, current overloads or accidental contacts. This explosive condition includes a broad spectrum of electromagnetic energy, plasma, fragments of damaged equipment and molten metal from the destruction of conductors at the point of the arc flash.
An arc flash event can generate temperatures reaching 35,000°F – that is four times hotter than the surface of the sun. The molten copper that is generated from an arc flash often exceeds 2,000°F and rapidly expands from the source of the arc event, often at a great distance from it. Between the super-heated plasma, the molten copper and the overall force of the arc event, everyone in its vicinity is at serious risk of injury or even death. The effects of an arc flash can be devastating unless you are properly protected.
While Honeywell Salisbury pioneered the move away from green lenses to less opaque bronze, there was still room for innovation to provide even clearer vision for workers and increase the line of sight. Building upon PrismShield™ technology, the PrismShield™ Plus face shield is the next iteration in a line of successful products. The use of nanoparticle technology allows for enhanced color differentiation and improved light transmittance, while the double curved lens redesign provides superior optical performance and greatly reduces eye strain while wearing the face shield. User comfort is heightened by a venting system allowing fresh air in from the bottom and moisture to escape from the top.
Additional features and benefits include the following: |
- DOUBLE CURVED LENS - Limits visual distortion and greatly reduces eye strain.
-
NANOTECHNOLOGY - Improved shield transparency provides better visibility and color recognition in poorly lit rooms.
- WEIGHT BALANCING FRAME - An exclusive Honeywell Salisbury feature that increases comfort by reducing neck strain for users.
- FRAMELESS DESIGN - Increases viewing area by over 20%.
-
VENTING - Allows usage for longer periods of time.
- SCRATCH RESISTANT - 3 times more scratch resistant than the original PrismShield™ lens for an extended product life.
- AGENCY SPECIFICATIONS - Meets NFPA 70E, ASTM F2178 and ANSI Z87+ standards
|
The PrismShield™ Plus nanoparticle technology allows the full spectrum of light to be transmitted and observed by the user. Therefore, all colors can be observed and clearly identified with the new PrismShield™ Plus lens - blues are blue, greens are green.
Compared to the legacy green arc shields from Salisbury, the PrismShield™ Plus transmits 25% more wavelengths, making colors clearer and more visible across the color spectrum. Cutting edge nanotechnology enhances PrismShield™ Plus visibility, making colors stand out and be easily identified from each other.
PrismShield™ Plus color recognition makes colors visible where they once were almost indistinguishable. The circles below are common when testing for color blindness, the superior performance of the PrismShield™ Plus is undeniable.
|
Color recognition testing showed that using the PrismShield™ Plus provides similar color perception as not wearing a face shield at all.
Saf-T-Gard offers a variety of Honeywell Salisbury PrismShield™ Plus Face Shields styles, including lift front hoods, weight balancing (with or without hard hats) and pro-hoods sold individual or as part of a kit. Click here to shop them online or call customer service at 1-800-548-GARD (4273) today for more information or to place an order.

Watch the FREE Protective Industrial Products (PIP) Hearing Protection: Standards, Basics and Types Webinar ON DEMAND |
Your hearing is a vital part of your overall health, and it's important to take steps to protect it from noise exposure. Hearing protection comes in many forms, from ear plugs to ear muffs, and the level of protection offered varies. It's important to understand the basics in order to choose the best option for your needs.
One key factor to look at is the Noise Reduction Rating (NRR). This is a measure of how much noise protection a product can offer and is expressed in decibels (dB). The higher the NRR, the more effective the hearing protection. It's important to note that the NRR is only a guide, and actual noise reduction will vary depending on how well the product fits and how it's worn.
Another important consideration is OSHA regulations. OSHA has set standards for permissible noise exposure levels and requires employers to provide workers with hearing protection if they are exposed to noise at or above these levels. When selecting hearing protection in the workplace, be sure to understand OSHA's regulations to ensure you're choosing the options that meets the requirements for your particular environments.

Question 1 - Does 29 CFR 1910.151(b) only cover basic first aid?
Answer - Paragraph 1910.151(b) of OSHA's general industry standard, Medical services and first aid (29 CFR 1910.151), states, "In the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace which is used for the treatment of all injured employees, a person or persons shall be adequately trained to render first aid. Adequate first aid supplies shall be readily available." Employers should provide medical services and first aid that are most appropriate to respond to incidents at their workplaces. OSHA allows employers to tailor the specific details of their first aid and medical services program, depending on the circumstances of each workplace and employer.
Question 2 - Is having personnel trained in adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) an OSHA requirement?
Answer - OSHA recommends that CPR training be a general program element of a first aid program. However, some OSHA standards, for example, Logging operations (29 CFR 1910.266), Permit-required confined spaces (29 CFR 1910.146), and Electric power generation, transmission, and distribution (29 CFR 1910.269), have specific requirements that employees be trained in first aid and CPR. If an employer is covered by one of these specific standards, CPR training would be required.

Does OSHA's Control of hazardous energy (lockout/tagout or LOTO) standard, 29 CFR 1910.147 permit maintenance personnel in a metal fabrication punch press operation to stand inside the guard across the back of the machine to observe and troubleshoot malfunctions of the dies?
If the employee is observing whether the equipment is operating properly, this activity would be considered inspecting the equipment and, therefore, would be considered Servicing and/or Maintenance as defined at §1910.147(b). Although LOTO applies to Servicing and Maintenance, minor adjustments which occur during normal production operations may be exempt from the LOTO under the minor servicing exception. The minor servicing exception provides that minor tool changes and adjustments and other minor servicing activities which take place during normal production operations may be exempt from the LOTO standard if the activity is routine, repetitive, and integral to the use of the equipment for production purposes, provided that the work is performed using alternative measures which provide effective employee protection. An employer bears the burden of demonstrating, on a case-by-case basis, that the minor servicing exception applies, in accordance with the note found at §1910.147(a)(2)(ii). If the minor servicing exception were to apply, the employer would need to employ alternative safeguarding measures. Such alternative safeguarding measures may include devices such as, but not limited to, two-hand trip or control devices, restraint devices that prevent the employee from entering the zone of danger, video cameras that would allow remote observation of the dies, and plexiglass barriers that allow for close inspection of the operation yet prevent introduction of the employee's body into the machine hazard area. It must be emphasized that every employee performing these inspection tasks must be protected from exposure to hazardous energy.
If the inspection/troubleshooting activity described does not constitute minor servicing during normal production operations, the LOTO standard also recognizes that there are circumstances under which it is absolutely necessary to test and position the machine while energized during servicing and maintenance. The provisions found in §1910.147(f)(1) allow for the testing or positioning of machines while energized, however, the provisions also require that employees be removed from the area when the energization and testing and/or positioning occurs. In the event that it is impossible to remove employees from the machine area and still conduct the type of inspection that must be performed, the employer must provide alternative employee protection through the use of the safeguarding measures previously discussed (e.g., two-hand trip or control devices, employee restraints, cameras, and plexiglass barriers) to be in compliance with the standard.

It is November 2022 and we are deep into the end-of-year holiday season. November is the month of Thanksgiving in the US, and we at Saf‑T‑Gard have so much to be thankful for.
First and foremost, we thank you, our customers, for your business. More than that we thank you for your friendship and for trusting us to be part of your company’s safety program. We appreciate the confidence that you have in our sales and service team. We never lose sight of the fact that our customers really sign our paychecks. As we approach the season of giving, our gift to your workers is our Mission Statement: To provide, based on our experience, expertise, and understanding of our customer’s requirements, solutions to their needs for industrial safety products and personal protective equipment of the finest world-class quality, appropriate and suitable for the purposes intended, that provide value, safety, and security.

Every business depends on customers, staff, and suppliers. We are continually grateful for the support of our vendors that we are proud to represent. Many of our suppliers or their predecessor companies have worked with us for most of our 86-year history. So, at the risk of overusing the term “partnership”, we believe that when we join forces with our supplier partners, 1 + 1 really equals more than 2.
See, this month’s As I See It is not about any product or pitch or program. In this month of Thanksgiving, we are reminded that sometimes we just need to take a step back and say THANKS, because we are Saf-T-Gard International - Bringing Workers Home Safely Since 1936. Sincerely, Richard A. Rivkin, Saf-T-Gard CEO and Chairman of the Board |
