Cut Protection Levels: Do I Really Need That A4?
|
|
|
|
Selecting the right cut protection glove out of a sea of options
can be a daunting and challenging task. Gloves have differentiating cut
protection levels that may range from dramatic differences to minuscule
changes. It’s hard to know what level of cut protection is needed, let alone
what product to choose.
ANSI standards are critical to consider when selecting
cut gloves. Prior to March 2016, there were only five ANSI cut levels when
evaluating PPE. With the changes to the ANSI cut standards in March 2016, there
is now one uniform piece of equipment, the TDM machine, used for testing and
nine levels of cut protection notated by the A1 to A9 markings.
The biggest
effect of these new levels is more segmentation in what was the old ANSI cut 4
range. Gloves rated level 4 in the old range can be rated A4, A5 or A6 in the
new range. The new high-end levels - A7, A8 and A9 - will apply to some food
gloves and manufacturing gloves geared for working with razor sharp objects.
Selecting the right cut glove ensures you are protected
and will have the right level of performance for the required job. Saf-T-Gard has an extensive portfolio of
Ansell Hand Protection products, including general purpose gloves,
cut-resistant gloves, mechanic’s gloves, cut-resistant gloves, chemical-resistant
gloves and more. Click here

How Can I Know the Footwear I'm Buying Has Enough Slip Resistance for My Workplace? |
|
|
|
Safety footwear is an
important part of your day-to-day PPE. You depend on it not only to protect you
from the impact of heavy objects but also to provide you with enough stability
so you can move around without slipping and falling.
For years, OSHA has listed
slips, trips, and falls as the most frequent causes of workplace accidents.
Safety footwear with good anti-slip properties can, therefore, substantially
decrease your risk of injury. But first, you need to make sure you're selecting
the right kind.
Assess the Hazards
Selecting the right footwear
starts with the hazard assessment process. What are the tasks that can result
in slips and what qualities should your footwear have to prevent those incidents?
What footwear works best
will depend on where you work (agriculture, construction, hospitality, mining,
emergency) and what type of slip hazards you face (mud, oil, wet floors,
cooking oil, water).
Look for Verified Slip
Resistance
Many manufacturers will
claim that their safety footwear is slip-resistant, but we shouldn't put our
trust in their products unless that claim has been verified by a proven testing
method.
One of the most common
testing methods is the Brungraber Mark II, incorporated in the ASTM F1677-96
MARK II non-slip testing standard. So, shoes that meet this standard have been
adequately tested and would have proven slip resistance.
You should inquire with the
manufacturer or the sales representative about the materials and methods used
to determine the slip resistance. These tests are usually run on different
materials (such as concrete, tile, and so on) on Dry, Wet, or Hi Soil Oily/Wet
conditions, resulting in a coefficient of friction (COF) between 0.0 and 1.
Ideally the safety shoe we are considering buying has a high COF (over 0.5)
tested in conditions fairly similar to the ones in our workplace. So, for
example, a safety boot with a Hi Soil Oily/Wet COF of 0.6 would be a good
choice if you're working outdoors in muddy conditions.
Though these tests are rigorous and
trustworthy, the testing is generally geared towards dry, wet, or oily
conditions. That would be satisfactory for most safety footwear used indoors or
used outdoors outside of the winter season. Most reputable manufacturers have
developed their own cold/freezing weather technology that depends mostly on
abrasive materials embedded in the sole's material, which provides boot
adherence on ice and snow.
Know Your Needs and Get the
Right Footwear
To make sure the footwear
you're considering has appropriate slip resistance for your workplace, you need
to know that it meets specific standards and that its COF has been tested against conditions close
to the ones on your worksite. Preferably, you will also get a safety shoe or
boot that has been built by a reputable company that takes testing seriously.

Safety Tips |
|
|
|
1. THICK OR THIN - EITHER WAY YOU WIN - Chemical-resistant
gloves are available in a wide range of thicknesses, while thinner gloves offer
more tactile sensitivity; thicker gloves offer more durability and
protection against chemical permeation and degradation
2. COATING GLOATING - EYEWEAR - Protective
eyewear is available with fog-free coatings as well as anti-scratch coatings
3. COATING GLOATING - GLOVES -
Industrial gloves are available with protective coatings of latex rubber,
neoprene and nitrile synthetic rubbers, PVC and PVA and PU plastics - each with
different properties for protection against chemicals, abrasions, cuts and
punctures and tactile sensitivity
4. OSHA HEARS YOU - YOU HEAR OSHA -
Your workers are entitled to a choice of hearing protection to achieve desired
levels of protection with comfort, and many different types of earplugs and
earmuffs are available to help you comply with this important requirement
5. DIVERSE WORKFORCE - DIVERSE PRODUCTS -
Smart business and regulatory compliance demand that PPE properly fit the
worker to be effective, and respirators and protective eyewear are available
to fit Asian and Hispanic workers with unique facial characteristics

Q&A
|
|
|
|
|
Question: Can gloves be repaired or recycled?
Answer: Many types of gloves can be recycled
by laundering or cleaning and the recycling instructions are generally included
in the printed Information for Users insert packed with the
gloves. To facilitate sorting after recycling, gloves frequently have
color-coded cuffs or other visual identification to designate hand size.
Repairing low-cost general purpose industrial gloves is rarely cost-effective. Repairing chemical protective gloves is not recommended. Repairing
stainless steel mesh safety gloves IS a cost-effective option for prolonging
the useful life of the product.

Requirements for Fall Protection
"What is the threshold height above which employees must be
furnished with fall protection equipment?
The threshold height is six (6) feet, as per the following excerpts from
29 CFR 1926.501:
1926.501(b)(1)
"Each employee on a walking/working surface (horizontal and vertical
surface) with an unprotected side or edge which is six (6) feet (1.8 m) or more above
a lower level shall be protected from falling by the use of guardrail systems,
safety net systems or personal fall arrest systems.
1926.501(b)(2)(ii)
Each employee on a walking/working surface six (6) feet (1.8 m) or more above a lower
level where leading edges are under construction, but who is not engaged in the
leading edge work, shall be protected from falling by a guardrail system,
safety net system or personal fall arrest system. If a guardrail system is
chosen to provide the fall protection, and a controlled access zone has already
been established for leading edge work, the control line may be used in lieu of
a guardrail along the edge that parallels the leading edge.
1926.501(b)(15)
"Walking/working surfaces not otherwise addressed." Except as
provided in 1926.500(a)(2) or in 1926.501 (b)(1) through (b)(14), each employee
on a walking/working surface six (6) feet (1.8 m) or more above lower levels shall be
protected from falling by a guardrail system, safety net system or personal
fall arrest system.

As I See It |
|
|
|
It is April 2019, and with the start of spring (yes, all of the
snow in our area has melted by now), it’s time to revisit our perspective...on
worker safety. Perspective means framework or a point of view, and rightly
should balance “a fresh perspective” with “an experienced perspective.” Too
much of one or the other may not be a good option. With respect to worker
safety, a danger in too much of “a fresh perspective” is that expertise must be
tempered with experience. Promoting the newest and latest and greatest widget
without the experience of understanding job hazards and the human element can
lead to rash or haphazard product and process recommendations. Alternatively,
relying solely on the way things have always been done, solely the experienced
perspective, precludes consideration of new products and processes that have
the potential of enhancing safety and productivity in a cost-effective manner. The ideal situation may well be a combination of experience and new ideas, like
a salad where oil or vinegar alone aren’t as tasteful as an oil-and-vinegar
combination salad dressing. We’re proud of the Saf-T-Gard team that offers this
ideal situation of experience and new ideas. We’ve got industry veterans with
decades of experience, and we’ve got relative newcomers charged with the
responsibility to question “the way we’ve always done things” and inject that
fresh perspective. What that means for our customers is that we have the
resources, the expertise, the experience and the fresh perspective to be your PPE
and facility safety resource. Call your Saf-T-Gard representative (or me
directly) today and we’ll get started, because we are Saf-T-Gard International -
Bringing Workers Home Safely Since 1936.
