How to Choose the Right Cut Protection |
|

|
|
There is more to cut gloves than just choosing the right level
of protection. Below are questions to consider when evaluating available
options:
- What level of cut protection is
needed? Assess the workplace environment and identify any potential
hazards.
- What are the grip
considerations? Is there a dry, oily or dusty environment?
- How much dexterity is needed? Do my
workers require cushion/padding or more free-range?
- What other elements should be
considered? i.e. Thermal protection, touchscreen compatibility,
heat-resistance, etc.
|
|

|
Saf-T-Gard carries a wide range of Ansell®
cut-resistant gloves in many different materials, including Dyneema® and Dyneema®
blends, HPPE, nylon blends, Kevlar® blends and polyethylene, and many different
coatings, including foam nitrile, nitrile, polyurethane and water-based

What are EHS Professionals Doing to Prevent Heat Stress?
|
|

|
|
Heat-related illness accounted for 815 worker fatalities and more than 66,000 injuries in the United States between 1992 and 2017. And with
average heat indexes perennially rising, it’s never been more crucial for
employers to establish comprehensive heat stress prevention plans to keep
workers safe.
What Exactly are Heat-Related
Illnesses?
Heat stress occurs when
the body fails to control its internal temperature, allowing it to exceed 99.7°
F (37.6° C). While that can result in a variety of side effects, the most
common heat-related illnesses (HRIs) are heat rash, heat cramps, heat
exhaustion and heat stroke.
What’s Being Done to Prevent
Heat Stress on the Worksite?
While OSHA has not established any federal heat illness
prevention standards, there are general guidelines about hydration, shift/break
length and how to identify heat stress symptoms. But these guidelines are only
as good as their awareness, which is why Ergodyne® teamed up with EHS Daily
Advisor to better understand if and how employers are incorporating heat
illness prevention into overall workplace safety.
Heat Stress Prevention
To get a pulse on the industry’s approach to heat stress
prevention, Ergodyne® worked with EHS Daily Advisor to survey 452 environmental,
health and safety professionals—86% of whom indicated working in the heat as a
requirement of their job. Of that 86% over a quarter recorded at least one
heat-related illness in the past 5 years.
Considering heat-related illness is 100% preventable with
adequate hydration, rest, shade, cooling PPE and sunscreen, even one incident
is one too many. The results of this survey illuminate what work still needs to
be done to implement more widespread heat stress awareness and prevention
measures on the jobsite.
Saf-T-Gard
supplies a comprehensive selection of Ergodyne® heat stress products, including
cooling towels, neck shades, cooling vests, cooling hard hat pads, cooling
bandanas, dew rags and tents. Click here to shop them online, or

Counterfeit Respirators |
|

|
|
Since the fall 2020, healthcare workers have been reporting to
HPAE concerns over highly-suspicious, ill-fitting, misshapen, sometimes torn
and, often, odd-smelling “3M™” masks they are being given by their employers
while providing care for patients during a pandemic outbreak. Workers have
reported to their employers that it is difficult to get the proper seal with these
masks to ensure they are fully protected. As it turns out, the nation is
inundated with fake respirator masks.
Click here to download a guide
developed by the Health Professionals and Allied Employees Union on how to tell
whether the masks you’ve been provided are potentially counterfeit.

What are the requirements to give workers a choice of hearing protection
devices?
OSHA regulations, 29 CFR 1910.95(i)(3),
states: "Employees shall be given the opportunity to select their hearing
protectors from a variety of suitable hearing protectors provided by the
employer." In this instance, OSHA did not intend to specify the number of
types or variety of hearing protectors from which employees may make their
selection. Instead OSHA included this performance language recognizing that
there be several reasons why employees should be allowed to select from a
variety of hearing protectors.
Plant conditions such as dust,
temperature, and humidity can cause one type of protector to be more suitable
than another. For example, earplugs can be more comfortable in a hot, humid
environment, than earmuffs. Also, individual ear canals come in all shapes and
sizes. For people with unusually-shaped ear canals, fitting may be difficult,
and commonly-used insert protectors may be very uncomfortable.
In general, employers are advised to
give workers a choice between at least one type of earplug and one type of
muff since individuals may be more comfortable in one type of protection than
in the other. However, the number of different hearing protectors required to
constitute an adequate variety is simply the number needed to supply each
employee that requires a hearing protector a suitable one. The term
"suitable hearing protectors" as used in the provision means that the protectors are comfortable to wear and offer sufficient attenuation
to prevent hearing loss.

As I See It |
|

|
|
It is April 2021, and as vaccinations increase and
(optimistically) the pandemic starts to recede, we see businesses reopening and
planning for renewed growth. So we would like to remind you that you have
choices.
Head-to-toe you have choices. In head protection, for example,
outdoor workers have more choices than ever. Keep cool and safe with vented
caps that certainly still comply with ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 as required by OSHA. And,
since UV light can degrade the safety hat and cap material over time, 3M™
products with UVicator™ sensors indicate when it is time to replace
the product. Some safety caps even have integrated eye protection.
Hearing protection? So many choices! Earmuff choices include
over-the-head, behind-the-neck, and cap-mounted. Earplug choices include
reusable and single-use disposable in different materials and shapes. Plus for
critical operations like food processing, metal-detectable earplugs are
available and all earplugs can be supplied with a safety cord. And you can
dispense earplugs wherever in the plant they are needed with magnetic mounting
brackets.
Unfortunately, the pandemic has raised the visibility of
respiratory protection and we have choices and solutions there, too. We have
stocked up on major brand (3M™, Honeywell, Moldex®) N95 filtering
facepiece (disposable) respirators so industrial buyers can get prompt delivery
on recognized name brands from us. But there are so many more choices for
respiratory protection to protect workers against specific hazards.
It
really takes a safety specialist (not the guy in the orange apron or an
impersonal website named after a jungle in South America) to help industrial
buyers navigate through all of the choices.
How
do we know this? Because we are Saf-T-Gard International - Bringing
Workers Home Safely Since 1936.
