Free Resources from Ergodyne for OSHA's Safety Stand-Down Week

Fatalities caused by falls from elevation continue to be a leading cause of death for construction employees, accounting for 351 of the 1,008 construction fatalities recorded in 2020 (BLS data). Those deaths were preventable. The National Safety Stand-Down raises fall hazard awareness across the country in an effort to stop fall fatalities and injuries.

A Safety Stand-Down is a voluntary event for employers to talk directly to employees about safety. Any workplace can hold a stand-down by taking a break to focus on "Fall Hazards" and reinforcing the importance of "Fall Prevention". Employers of companies not exposed to fall hazards can also use this opportunity to have a conversation with employees about the other job hazards they face, protective methods, and the company's safety policies and goals. It can also be an opportunity for employees to talk to management about fall and other job hazards they see.

Anyone who wants to prevent hazards in the workplace can participate in the Stand-Down. In past years, participants included commercial construction companies of all sizes, residential construction contractors, sub- and independent contractors, highway construction companies, general industry employers, the U.S. Military, other government participants, unions, employer's trade associations, institutes, employee interest organizations, and safety equipment manufacturers.

Companies can conduct a Safety Stand-Down by taking a break to have a toolbox talk or another safety activity such as conducting safety equipment inspections, developing rescue plans, or discussing job specific hazards.

Ergodyne has developed a collection of tools to help create a complete at-heights safety strategy:

  New ANSI 2021 Standard Announced

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) – Minimum Requirements for Workplace First Aid Kits and Supplies (ANSI/ISEA Z308.1-2021) establishes minimum performance requirements for first aid kits and their supplies. First Aid kits are classified based on the assortment and quantity of first aid supplies intended to manage most types of injuries and sudden illnesses that may be encountered in the workplace. These may include major and minor wounds; minor burns; sprains and strains; and eye injuries. As each work environment is unique, it is expected that the contents of each kit will be supplemented as needed based upon the recommendations of a person competent in First Aid.

ANSI announced the 2021 standard will require compliance by October 16th, 2022. Click here to see the components first aid kits must contain to be compliant with the ANSI 2021 standard.

Five Safety Tips

1. CLEAN IT UP - Spill kits contain everything necessary to clean up oil-only spills, general maintenance spills, or hazmat spills

2. CLEAN IT UP - Body fluid clean up kits are available in a wide range of kit sizes and packaging

3. CLEAN IT UP - Dirty protective eyewear is unsafe

4. CLEAN IT UP - Rubber insulating gloves and related protective gear need a specialized detergent to remove grease and grime without harming the dielectric properties of the products

5. CLEAN IT UP - Respirator facepieces need to be kept clean, fresh, and sanitary

Question - Do employers have to pay for body belts, positioning straps, and pole and tree climbers (gaffs or hooks) when used by qualified employees working on poles or towers?

Answer - Yes. Body belts, positioning straps, and pole and tree climbers provide protection to employees from falls while climbing or performing other work.

This personal climbing equipment, which is specifically required by §§1910.268(g), 1910.269(g)(2), and 1926.951(b), is PPE, and employers must pay for the equipment when the equipment is used to comply with an OSHA standard.

Factoid

Is it permitted to intermingle flammable and combustible liquids in a storage cabinet?

Clarification was requested on an apparent ambiguity in OSHA's standard for Flammable and Combustible Liquids, 29 CFR 1910.106, specifically the use of the words "or" and "nor" in the paragraph Design, Construction, and Capacity of Storage Cabinets-Maximum Capacity, 29 CFR 1910.106(d)(3)(i), which states, "Not more than 60 gallons of Class I or Class II liquids, nor more than 120 gallons of Class III liquids may be stored in a storage cabinet."

This language is an adaptation of similar language in section 4210 of the 1969 edition of the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) Standard 30, Flammable and Combustible Liquids (source standard for 29 CFR 1910.106), which states, "Not more than 60 gallons of flammable or 120 gallons of combustible liquids may be stored in a storage cabinet."

OSHA never intended to prohibit intermingling flammable and combustible liquids in a storage cabinet or to allow more than 120 gallons of any flammable and combustible liquids combination in a storage cabinet. NFPA 30 - 1981 Section 4-3.1 states, "Not more than 120 gal (454.2L) of Class I, Class II, and Class IIIA liquids may be stored in a storage cabinet. Of this total, not more than 60 gal (227.1L) may be of Class I and Class II liquids..." OSHA finds this language represents the intent of 29 CFR 1910.106(d)(3)(i) clearly and unambiguously.

As I See It

It is April 2022, and the possibility (?) of springtime is in the air (disregarding the snowflakes that we had in the Midwest earlier this month). Springtime reminds us to enjoy the fresh air and that brings with it all sorts of fresh ideas.

How fresh is that respirator you are wearing? Filtering facepiece (disposable) respirators like N95s do not last forever. Replace them when they get dirty, start to smell, or the breathing resistance increases noticeably. For industrial applications, consider an air-purifying respirator with replaceable filters and cartridges. And if that respirator facepiece is still dirty, smelling, and grungy even with regular cleaning and sanitizing (we have respirator wipes for that), talk to your Saf-T-Gard safety specialist about trading in that old facepiece for a fresh new facepiece and a fresh approach to industrial respiratory protection.

How fresh is that safety cap or hat that you are wearing? They don’t last forever, either. Sunlight UV and other hazards affect the integrity of the safety headwear material over time. How old is your safety hat? There is a manufacturing date code marked on each unit. Did you know that safety caps are now available with a UV indicating sensor that shows when it’s time to be replaced? And if it is really old, consider some of the newer designs in safety headgear including hats and caps with air-flow vents to help keep workers cool plus specialized caps for working at heights with integrated chinstraps.

And, finally (for this month), how about reFRESHing your workers’ electrolytes, especially in hot and humid environments? Sqwincher is an industrial-strength rehydration solution with a product range that meets your needs. This year’s annual Sqwincher promotion is a free freezer with an order for 60 cases of Sqwincher Sqweeze Freeze Pops.
