Nonfatal Injury and Illness Rate in Private Sector Continues Downward Trend: BLS |
|
|
|
Washington
— The nonfatal injury and illness rate for private-sector United States employees
continued to decline in 2017, as did the rate of nonfatal injuries and
illnesses requiring days away from work, according to annual data released Nov. 8 by the Bureau of Labor
Statistics.
Reported
nonfatal injuries and illnesses occurred at a rate of 2.8 cases per 100
full-time workers in 2017, compared with 2.9 in 2016 and 3.0 in 2015. The rate
has fallen in all but one year since 2003, steadying at 3.4 in 2011 and 2012.
Survey
of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses estimates show that approximately 2.8
million nonfatal injuries and illnesses were reported in 2017 – about 48,500
fewer than the previous year. The overall total includes 882,730 cases that
resulted in days away from work, a rate of 89.4 injury and illness cases per
10,000 full-time workers that fell from 91.7 in 2016 and 93.9 in 2015.

Virtual Safety Manager |
|
|
|
The Virtual
Safety Manager (VSM) Program leverages SPI’s 25+ years of industry knowledge,
proprietary technology, and proven protocols to establish, support, and
maintain safety programs for companies across the United States.
Too often, companies
will task an unqualified HR or administrative employee with the complex task of
safety management. With no safety knowledge, these employees do the bare
minimum and open their company to increased liability and potential disaster. The VSM Program is designed to create and support serious safety programs
without the cost of a full-time safety professional. Though every safety
program is customized to the client’s specific needs, each VSM program has 3
common components:
- Customized Program
Configuration – VSM clients will meet
with a Safety Plus, Inc. Safety Expert to analyze your risks and exposures to
establish the policies, protocols and procedures of your new safety program
- Safety Program
Oversight – Safety programs are not
something that you can set and forget; they require consistent monitoring and
stern adherence to established rules, and VSM offers clients ongoing, unbiased
evaluations of their safety metrics and will follow pre-determined protocols
for notifying the client of risks in their program
- Safety Content – The
VSM program includes access to an extensive library of SPI’s safety resources,
including the SafetyPlusWeb™ Training Library, 400+ Toolbox Talks,
safety policy database, and more – employees can take training online from any
location with their own unique login information or in group settings monitored
by an administrative employee
All VSM
customers have premium access to SafetyPlusWeb, Safety Plus Inc.’s
proprietary safety management software. SafetyPlusWeb access allows customers
to train employees, track compliance, log inspections, manage incidents, host
safety meetings, assign drug tests and pull analytics at any time.
To offer
even greater support, VSM customers can select from a list of additional safety
services to support their unique safety needs. From instructor-led training and
semi-regular facility/jobsite audits to DOT driver file management and pre-qualification services, Safety Plus offers the safety services
organizations need to stay compliant and keep employees safe.
Click here to request a quote, and call customer service at
1-800-548-GARD
(4273) for more information on SafetyPlusWeb, the cloud-based safety
management system that allows customers to track employee training and compliance
and gain unlimited access to 65+ training videos, editable safety policies,
Toolbox Talks and hundreds of other safety resources.

What's Fact or Fiction with Welding Hazards - Let's Set the Record Straight! |
|
|
|
Welding is often considered an art form, even in production
or manufacturing environments. It is a skill that takes both practice and the
appropriate protection to perfect.
For the half of a million workers who
perform welding activities daily, oftentimes alongside multiple workers in
close quarters, it is important to consider all the hazards present in the
workplace – and not just the ones you can see.

OSHA Resources Can Help Workers Stay Safe during the Holiday Season |
|
|
|
Retailers
and other businesses temporarily increase staffing levels to accommodate the
busy holiday shopping season. OSHA has resources to help keep warehouse
employees, tractor trailer drivers and forklift operators safe as they work to
get merchandise to people's home. Retailers are encouraged to follow crowd
control safety guidelines, such as using trained security personnel or rope
lines for customers. For more information, visit OSHA's Holiday Workplace Safety webpage.

Safety Tips |

1. COLD WEATHER IS HERE - And
that means hand protection for outdoor workers should have warm linings
2. COLD WEATHER IS HERE - And
that means head protection for outdoor workers must include warm helmet liners
3. COLD WEATHER IS HERE - And
that means fewer hours of daylight and reduced visibility, which is another reason for Hi-Viz reflective clothing
4. COLD WEATHER IS HERE - And tungsten-carbide tipped rubber pullovers fit over any shoes or boots for superb traction on icy, slippery walkways and driveways
5. COLD WEATHER IS HERE - And
yes, that means colds are coming, too, so be sure you have enough
industrial-pack cold remedy medicines on hand

Q&A
|
|
|
|
|
Question - In a situation where employees who wear
prescription glasses wear a larger bulkier type of safety glasses over their
prescription glasses, what liability does the employer have from an OSHA
standpoint if an employee intentionally refuses to wear safety glasses?
Answer - Under §1910.133(a)(3), Eye and Face
Protection, the employer must ensure that each affected employee who wears
prescription lenses while engaged in operations that involve eye hazards wears
eye protection that incorporates the prescription in its design, or wears eye
protection that can be worn over the prescription lenses without disturbing the
proper position of the prescription lenses or the protective lenses.

Factoid |
|
|
|
"Do OSHA requirements prohibit an employee from wearing a cap,
scarf, or other item on his/her head, for purposes of cold weather protection,
while wearing a hard hat?"
OSHA 1926.100 provides, in part, . . . Helmets for the protection of
employees against impact and penetration of falling and flying objects shall
meet the specifications contained in American National Standards Institute,
Z89.1 [and ] Z89.2. . .
ANSI defines winter liners specifically designed for use with hard hats.
The use of the terms "accessories" and "winter liners"
indicate that these ANSI standards permit the use of cold weather liners that
are specifically designed for use with hard hats — that is, specifically
designed to be compatible with the protective properties of the helmets.
Therefore, use of a "winter liner" specifically designed to be
compatible with the hard hat's protective properties is not prohibited.
In contrast,
if the use of a garment were to detract from the hard hat's protective
properties, it may no longer meet the specification requirements in these ANSI
standards. If that were the case, its use would violate §1926.100.
It is unlikely that an employer would be able to determine whether a
garment not specifically designed to be compatible with a hard hat's protective
properties, in fact, compromised those properties. Consequently, as a practical
matter, an employer typically would not be able to ascertain if its use
violated §1926.100. Therefore, [OSHA] recommend[s] that employers permit only
liners that are specifically designed to be compatible with the protective
properties of the hard hat.

As I See It |
|
|
|
It is December 2018. The weather has changed and
pretty soon the calendar will change as well. CHANGE is definitely in the
air. So what else is worthy of change? So from head to toe, here is goes. Take
a look (and smell) at your safety cap or safety hat. There’s a code on the
underside of the brim, and if the headgear is more than a year old, it might be
time to replace it with a fresh safety cap or full brim safety hat with a fresh
suspension inside, too. There are lots of colors available and adding your
company logo is an easy and cost-effective identity booster. Do you or your
workers wear reusable respirators? Again, take a look (or smell) at the
respirator facepiece. Although you already know that respirator facepieces need to
be cleaned and disinfected regularly, consider trading in those old respirator
facepieces for fresh, new respirators. And we’ll take reasonable quantities of
many brands of respirator filters and cartridges as trade-ins for brand new
filters and cartridges to go with your new respirator facepieces. And when it
comes to hand protection (our legacy), the opportunities for changing products
to improve safety, performance, comfort, and ergonomics in a cost-effective way
are too numerous to list here. That’s why we recommend consulting one of our
experienced safety sales professionals. Just call, e-mail, fax, or even write
to us and we’ll take it from there. Now that’s a refreshing CHANGE as well.
From the
Saf-T-Gard family to you and yours, best wishes for a joyous, healthy,
happy and safe holiday season. We are Saf-T-Gard International - Bringing
Workers Home Safely Since 1936.
