Addressing Slippery Situations for Workers
|
|
|
|
Workers
in food processing and janitorial professions face several unique challenges
that require tailored protection against cuts, slippery liquids and chemicals.
To avoid injury, it is essential that workers wear gloves that provide a secure
grip and tactility without inhibiting their performance or comfort.
A common
challenge these workers face is wearing a glove too thick for the task at hand,
or too thin to properly protect them. It’s imperative that safety managers
understand the benefits of both disposable and reusable gloves – and when each
is appropriate. An ambidextrous single-use nitrile glove is necessary when the process dictates more frequent disposal, which can help reduce cross
contamination. A reusable glove is necessary when extended wear time is
required or if a hand-specific glove is desired for more comfort.
To meet
varying worker needs, Ansell has both disposable and reusable offerings. The
Microflex® 93-283 and 93-287 are disposable gloves made with Mega
Texture grip surface on the palms and fingers for comfort and confidence when
handling wet, oily, or fatty foods and objects. The AlphaTec® 37-310
is a lightweight, reusable glove engineered to allow optimum balance and
flexibility while protecting against light acids, greases, oils and liquids.
Both the
disposable and reusable glove options feature aggressive texture to best suit
worker needs, so safety managers can have peace of mind they are selecting the
right glove for the job.
Saf-T-Gard has an extensive
portfolio of Ansell and Microflex disposable gloves as well as many additional glove styles, including general purpose gloves, cut-resistant gloves,
mechanic’s gloves, chemical-resistant gloves and more. Click here
to shop them online, or call customer service at 1-800-548-GARD (4273) for
more information or to place an order.

have a new reason to get hooked on Voltgard® Electrical Safety
products with the arrival of the new Saf-T-Gard® Voltgard®
RESCUE-8T Telescopic Insulated Rescue Body Hook.

from hazardous areas and retracts when not in use for convenient storage while

Additional features and benefits
include the following:
- Coated and heat-treated with an
18" opening and mounted on an 8' telescopic fiberglass handle for
emergency rescue of injured personnel from hazardous areas
- Constructed using a thicker, sturdier
hook than most other competitive models, which is less likely to break off from
the handle
- The unique telescopic handle design
collapses to a compact overall length of 43” to conveniently fit inside a
standard shipping carton (43” x 20” x 2”) for ease of transportation/shipping
- Compact, retractable size ships for
less than $10, delivering tremendous value over other fixed-length 6’ rescue
hooks that can cost around $20 to ship and 8’ fixed-length rescue hooks that
can cost more than $100 to ship
- Hi-Viz yellow portion at the top of the
telescopic handle provides added visibility
- “No-Twist” triangular design allows the
telescopic handle to remain in a locked position when fully retracted
- Designed to comply with OSHA
1910.269(j) for the construction of live line tools and OSHA 1926.957 for the
use of live line tools
- All sections must be fully extended,
and all lock buttons must be fully locked before utilizing to ensure correct
usage
- Each section of the handle can be
individually removed for operation, cleaning and repair by depressing the lock
button from its locked position and sliding the sections apart
The Saf-T-Gard Voltgard RESCUE-8T Telescopic Insulated Rescue Body Hook is
sold individually and intended for use in rescuing workers from confined
spaces, in vaults, near electrical cabinets or switch gear. It's also ideal for
use in first aid rescue for public utilities, fire and emergency response
public safety departments, emergency response units for electric vehicles, auto
dealerships servicing electric vehicles and public swimming pools.

Get a FREE Wall Cabinet When You Purchase a ZOLL® AED Plus Package from
Saf-T-Gard
|
|
|
|
Did you know sudden cardiac
arrest (SCA) claims a life every two minutes or that SCA strikes nearly 326,000
people in the U.S. annually? SCA can strike anyone at any time, and it takes more lives each year
than breast cancer, lung cancer or AIDS. However, if the availability of timely
and appropriate care such as CPR or the use of an AED is increased, survival
rates will improve. To further illustrate this point, the average
survival rate of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests each year is 7%. If an AED is
used by a bystander, the rate increases to 38%.
To help
you ensure your facility's 3-5 minute drop-to-shock response time, ZOLL is offering a FREE AED Wall Cabinet ($199 value) when you purchase a ZOLL AED Plus® Package (semi-automatic or fully-automatic)
from Saf-T-Gard now through September 30, 2019.
Only ZOLL’s AED Plus is
equipped with Real CPR Help® technology, giving the rescuer real-time feedback
on the depth and rate of chest compressions during CPR. The sensor in the pads
lets the AED see each chest compression and guides the rescuer, with prompts
and a real-time bar gauge, to the recommended depth and rate of compressions.
The ZOLL AED Plus is available in semi-automatic and fully-automatic versions,
and each package includes a ZOLL AED Plus with AED cover, an adult electrode
pad (CPR-D-padz®), (1) sleeve of lithium 123A batteries, medical
prescription and a soft carry case.
Additional features and benefits include the following:
- Real CPR Help provides
unique assistance to rescuers with real-time feedback on CPR compression depth
and rate
- Novel electrode design
delivers a five-year shelf life and fits 99% of the population’s chest anatomy
- Pull-tabs expose the
conductive gel on each pad only when it is in direct contact with the skin,
limiting the chance of gel contamination
- CPR-D-padz meet applicable
ANSI/AAMI/ISO DF-39-1993 requirements and offer clear anatomical placement
illustrations as well as a CPR hand positioning landmark and comes complete
with a rescue accessory package, including a barrier mask, razor, scissors,
disposable gloves and a towelette
- Display screen presents the elapsed time and number
of shocks delivered
- Back-lit display screen provides simultaneous text
with every audio prompt and a circle of lighted graphical icons that show what
to do
Offer includes the following

Safety Tips |
|
|
|
1. GOOD (UN)VIBRATIONS -
ANSI has adopted as an American Standard the international anti-vibration glove
standard now to be known as ANSI S3.40/2002:ISO10819, so be sure the
vibration-reducing gloves you use are in compliance
2. TIP TOP TOES - Steel toe boots and work shoes
meeting ANSI A41 I/75 C/75 standards provide safe toe protection
3. BREATHE DEEP BREATHE EASY - Gas
detection instrumentation is available for single-gas and multi-gas hazards
4. LOCK IT UP - Lockout/tagout procedures and
products are simple and convenient to use and assist in OSHA compliance
5. AND WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS - New
standards for first aid kits are based on intended use and hazards and should
always be convenient and accessible

Q&A
|
|
|
|
|
Question - "What are the applicable OSHA regulations regarding employees being required to work in extreme heat?"
Answer - OSHA does not have a specific regulation regarding heat stress. However, feasible and acceptable methods can be used to reduce heat stress hazards in workplaces. These include, but are not limited to:
- Permitting workers to drink water at liberty
- Establishing provisions for a work/rest regimen so that exposure time to high temperatures and/or the work rate is decreased
- Developing a heat stress program which incorporates the following:
- A training program informing employees about the effects of heat stress, and how to recognize heat-related illness symptoms and prevent heat-induced illnesses
- A screening program to identify health conditions aggravated by elevated environmental temperatures
- An acclimation program for new employees or employees returning to work from absences of three or more days
- Specific procedures to be followed for heat-related emergency situations
- Provisions that first aid be administered immediately to employees displaying symptoms of heat-related illness
Although OSHA does not have a specific regulation covering heat stress hazards, the "General Duty Clause," Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (the Act), requires each employer to,
"furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm" OSHA has previously used the General Duty Clause to cite employers that have allowed employees to be exposed to potential serious physical harm from excessively hot work environments.

Factoid |

Employees are working on a guardrail-equipped scissor lift
platform that extends beyond the wheelbase of the lift. The scissor-lift meets
all the applicable requirements in Part 1926 Subpart L. The workers are on the
scissor lift only when the scissor-lift is stationary. In this scenario, are
such workers required to be tied-off?
When working from an elevated scissor lift
(ANSI A92.6 series), a worker need only be protected from falling by a properly
designed and maintained guardrail system. However, if the guardrail system is
less than adequate, or the worker leaves the safety of the work platform, an
additional fall protection device would be required.
