ISEA Leads Industry Action on Falls and Dropped Objects with New Safety at Heights Campaign |
|
|
|
The
International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) is helping employers reduce
the risk of fatalities and injuries from falls and dropped objects in
industrial, construction and other occupational settings by launching its 2019
Safety at Heights campaign.
The
campaign — which kicked off during Construction Safety Week
and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s sixth annual National Safety Stand-Down,
both observed May 6–10 — provides employers and workers educational information
at SafetyAtHeights.org.
Falling
and being struck by a dropped object are among the top causes of workplace
injuries and fatalities:
- The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)
reported that in 2017, “fatal falls were at their highest level in the 26-year
history of the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), accounting for 887
(17 percent) of worker deaths”
- BLS
reported that being struck by falling objects or equipment resulted in 45,940
injuries in 2017 (5.2% of all workplace injuries)
- According
to the Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) dropped objects are the
third leading cause of injuries in construction
“ISEA’s
fall protection members take very seriously that falls continue to be among the
top causes of fatalities in the workplace,” said Raymond Mann, Senior
Specialist Application Engineer for 3M Fall Protection and Chair of ISEA’s Fall
Protection Group. “We continually strive to create new fall protection
solutions, including custom configurations, using modern technology to help
protect the nation’s workforce from fall hazards.”
In
addition to falls, dropped objects also lead to an alarming number of workplace
deaths. In response to that hazard, ISEA and the American National Standards
Institute (ANSI) developed a first-in-the-industry standard aimed at helping
employers reduce the risk of dropped objects incidents in industrial and occupational
settings. ANSI/ISEA 121-2018, American National Standard for Dropped Object
Prevention Solutions establishes minimum design, performance, and labeling
requirements for solutions and testing that mitigate this hazard.
The
standard addresses four (4) active controls, but does not include passive controls.
The active controls are anchor attachments, tool attachments, tool tethers and
containers (e.g., buckets, pouches). Copies of the standard can be purchased online from ISEA
and from ANSI’s licensed resellers.
“Every
death in the workplace is a tragedy, and ISEA is dedicated to helping
industries and employers protect their workers from being injured or killed by
falling objects,” said Nate Bohmbach, Associate Product Director, Ergodyne and
Chair of ISEA’s Dropped Object Prevention Group.
See
additional details at SafetyAtHeights.org.
The ISEA campaign will continue throughout the year, in partnership with the
National Association of Tower Erectors (NATE)
and the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).

June is Also CPR Awareness Month
|
|
|
More specifically, June 1-7 is recognized as National CPR and AED Awareness week. This annual event, sponsored by the American Heart Association (AHA) with the American Red Cross and the National Safety Council, aims to foster awareness and emphasize how high-quality CPR with the use of an AED can save more lives. The event also seeks to make AEDs more publicly accessible. The AHA reports that each year more than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States.
|
|
Approximately 50% of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) victims require
defibrillation; all require CPR. If you perform CPR immediately and use an AED
within the first few minutes of SCA, you can double or triple a person’s chance
of survival according to the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation website.
Only ZOLL’s AED Plus® is
equipped with Real CPR Help® technology, giving the rescuer
real-time feedback on the depth and rate of chest compressions during CPR. The
sensor in the pads lets the AED see each chest compression and guides the
rescuer, with prompts and a real-time bar gauge, to the recommended depth and
rate of compressions. The ZOLL AED Plus is available in semi-automatic and
fully-automatic versions, and each package includes a ZOLL AED Plus with an AED
cover, an adult electrode pad (CPR-D-padz®), (1) sleeve of lithium
123A batteries, a medical prescription and a soft carrying case.
Make sure to talk to your
workers about the importance of learning CPR and having automated external
defibrillators (AEDs) nearby to treat a SCA victim and save a life. Click here
to download and display this FREE “Power of High-Quality CPR” flyer from ZOLL.
Saf-T-Gard provides several different styles of the ZOLL AED Plus, including
semi-automatic and fully-automatic packages, with or without medical
prescriptions, and with or without PlusTrac Professional1 or PlusTrac
Professional5. Click here

Q&A
|
|
|
|
|
Question: Must prospective employees with
facial hair be advised of applicable OSHA regulations prohibiting persons with
facial hair from using respirators with tight-fitting facepieces?
Answer: OSHA does not require employers to
inform applicants of OSHA regulations that may be applicable after hire. OSHA
regulations do not address matters related to employers' hiring and selection
of employees, but do require employers to ensure that employees (once employed)
are protected from exposure to workplace hazards.
OSHA's respiratory protection
standard (29 CFR 1910.134) specifies certain requirements for employers to
follow when their employees must wear respirators, which would be the case in sewage
treatment facilities. The standard states that the employer cannot permit
respirators with tight-fitting facepieces to be worn by employees who have
facial hair that comes between the sealing surface of the facepiece and the
face, or that interferes with valve function.
While the standard does not ban
beards per se, it does require employers to ensure that bearded employees who
are required to wear tight-fitting facepieces trim their beards so that they do
not interfere with the sealing surface of the respirator or are not so large
that they could interfere with valve function.
Some types of respirators do not require a face
seal and can usually be worn by bearded employees. Specifically, these are
positive pressure respirators of the hood and helmet type, and types that can
be used with a continuous-flow, supplied-air respirator, where facial hair and
beards will have less effect on the fit. For emergencies, there are also
emergency-use respirators with a 15-minute service life that provide a continuous
flow of air.
All respirators must be selected based on the
respiratory hazard to which the worker is exposed. The employer must also
consider user factors that affect respirator performance and reliability.

Are fit-check and medical evaluation requirements
different for disposable respirators than for other types?
Non-voluntary use of a filtering facepiece
(...disposable ... type dust respirator) requires that the employer establish
and implement a written respiratory protection program with worksite-specific
procedures. The respiratory protection program must include the medical
evaluation of employees.
...what OSHA means by "annual", with
regard to the training and fit test requirements in the Respiratory Protection
Standard. Annual means that training and fit testing must be conducted every
year, before or on the anniversary date of the employee's previous training and
fit test; for example, if the employee is trained or fit tested on February 1, 2019, then the employee must be trained or fit tested before or on February 1,
2020. The agency also requires, as addressed in [29 CFR
1910.134], that wearers of respirators conduct a fit check each and every time
they don a respirator. The fit check may be conducted according to the
manufacturer's instructions.

regarding disposable filtering facepiece respirators]

As I See It |
|
|
|
It is June 2019, and I
think summer is finally here. Baseball season is in full swing, so I guess I am
long overdue for sports metaphors! Winning in baseball depends on many factors.
A baseball team is made up of many players, just as a safety program is made up
of many elements. Reliable hitters get on base with singles and doubles – but
they do get on base score runs. Your company’s safety program also performs
well with incremental improvements. And with continuous incremental
improvements (just like base runners), your safety program is in position to
score. Focus on one department, application, or operation at a time and
consider how a different product or a better product could score big in terms
of reducing injuries and improving productivity. Of course, some games are won
by big-scoring home run hitters. Swinging for the fences is risky, but the
payoff can be big. And similarly, with your safety program, sometimes you need
to swing for the fences! Try a new product or process or program that is
totally different but has a measured likelihood of success. Just as sports
stars age, safety programs (including PPE) ages and regularly needs some new
players. To be sure, don’t overlook the manager and coaches. A good manager
looks out for the team and looks at the big picture (think compliance, worker’s
comp loss ratio, productivity, etc.). And the coaching staff includes
generalists and specialists. We are uniquely qualified to be your PPE coach. We are Saf-T-Gard International -
Bringing Workers Home Safely Since 1936.
