WHY GOOD HYDRATION IS IMPORTANT

There have been some studies on the effects of hydration and dehydration in the workplace, but the richest source of data and information we have about it comes from the field of athletic performance.

During competitive events, athletes can lose 6 to 10% of their body weight just through sweating. Unless they replace these lost fluids, they will experience a reduction in reaction time and decreased endurance. And it isn’t just these extreme cases of fluid loss that have these negative effects. It only takes mild dehydration – losing about 2% body weight through sweating – to trigger a decrease in overall performance. You'll rarely see it listed on a pre-safety checklist, but fluids are an important piece of personal protective equipment (PPE) that every worker should carry. Hydration plays a critical role in both the performance and safety of your team members.

NIOSH Observes National Ladder Safety Month

This month marks the third year of National Ladder Safety Month presented by the American Ladder Institute (ALI). This observance raises awareness about ladder safety to reduce ladder fall-related injuries and deaths. Each year more than 500,000 people are treated—and about 300 people die—from ladder-related injuries. In the United States alone, ladder injuries cost more than $24 billion in medical, work, legal, liability and pain and suffering expenses.

Falls from ladders continue to be a persistent problem for workers across many industries. For example, it was estimated that more than 120 miners and 10,350 construction workers sustain a ladder fall-related injury on the job each year. Slipping at the ladder base is the leading cause of extension ladder falls, and improper ladder setup angle can impact ladder stability and contribute to falls.

To help educate employers, safety and health professionals, and workers, NIOSH has developed resources to draw attention to work-related ladder falls. The free, award-winning NIOSH Ladder Safety app provides users with a host of tools to safely use extension and step ladders, from proper ladder selection to set up and use. The app has been downloaded more than 273,000 times. NIOSH also has a GIF, or animated image, that demonstrates how the angle measuring tool works.

Besides the ladder safety app, NIOSH has developed a number of infographics related to ladder use, including one that identifies six steps that miners can take to safely use a ladder. Another social media graphic shows how ladders account for 24% of all deaths from falls in construction. A number of ladder-specific resources are also available on the Stop Construction Falls website, which was developed with OSHA, CPWR—The Center for Construction Research and Training, and other partners, to prevent all fall types that occur in the construction industry.

In addition to these resources, NIOSH partnered with ALI and other groups to evaluate the effectiveness of two extension ladder positioning methods that use different body postures. Results showed that when setting up a ladder, users should hold the ladder rails at shoulder level, also known as the fireman’s body method, versus the standard method of holding a rung.

The fireman’s body method is another way to more accurately set the ladder angle when users don’t have access to the NIOSH Ladder Safety app. The ANSI A14 standard committee adopted this ladder positioning method in the latest revision to the ladder safety standards. Extension and straight ladders sold after January 1, 2018, and following the new standard, will include new safety product labels with detailed graphics describing the correct body positioning method.

DuPont Tyvek® Coveralls Have You Covered for Spray Foam Applications

When applying spray foam, workers face hazardous particulates and infectious agents in addition to potential take-home toxins. It is critical to avoid inhalation of, and skin and eye contact with, spray polyurethane foam chemicals.

Take-home toxins are hazardous substances that workers can unknowingly bring home on their clothes, shoes, skin, tools, and vehicle interiors. These hazards can embed themselves in furniture and laundry, circulate through household air, and be transmitted by person-to-person contact, leaving family members vulnerable.

Tyvek® disposable coveralls are especially relevant in this space, as they offer high abrasion resistance and a greater range of motion via their comfort fit design, resulting in fewer blowouts. Interested in learning more? Visit the SafeSPEC online catalog and product selector tool or order a sample to try for yourself at onlytyvek.com.

Saf-T-Gard carries a comprehensive line of DuPont Protective Garments in several different fabrics, including coveralls, pants, shirts, aprons, sleeves, lab coats and hazmat suits. Click here to view them online, or call customer service at 1-800-548-GARD (4273) for more information.

Watch the FREE "When in Doubt Lock it Out: Properly Controlling Hazardous Energy with Correct LOTO Training" Webinar Now Available On-Demand

Lockout/tagout is all about communication. Even if the procedures seem burdensome, following them to the letter is essential.

People often forget things. It happens especially when we're distracted, busy, or in a rush. It's normal. But when it's combined with powered equipment, it's also highly dangerous. Employees can be seriously or fatally injured if machinery they service or maintain unexpectedly energizes, starts up, or releases stored energy. OSHA's standard on the Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout), found in Title 29 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 1910.147, spells out the steps employers must take to prevent accidents associated with hazardous energy. Practicing LOTO not only provides workers with protection from industrial machinery, but also protects your company from extensive OSHA fines that can be detrimental to company reputation and finances.

Click here to watch this FREE webinar on-demand, and learn why implementing and following a carefully planned lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedure is so important as well as the steps you can take to make sure your program complies.

Safety Tips

1. WHAT A SIGHT! - The ANSI-ISEA 107 standard focuses on hazards associated with low visibility on the outdoor jobsite, so be sure to choose the proper class traffic safety vest for the application

2. WE'LL DRINK TO THAT - Dehydration is the leading cause of heat-related injuries, and the body absorbs electrolyte fluid beverages (like Sqwincher) several times faster than water alone

3. REAL KICK BACK STUFF - Protective footwear can now be selected for specific chemical protection, durability, steel toe protection and slip-resistant safety soles

4. JACK AND JILL WENT UP THE HILL - And we are sure they were wearing fall protection equipment

5. GOIN' TO THE MAT - Anti-fatigue matting combines safety with comfort to enhance worker productivity

Q&A

Question (from Canada): We test electrical wire at 3000V AC 60Hz. The tester is capable of putting out 95mA. What is deemed the maximum safe current at this voltage that an operator can work with safely? Is there an OSHA or NEC specified max. allowable current? What protective equipment should a person be wearing (i.e. gloves, apron, etc.)?

Answer: First, the hazards - Based on OSHA regulations and NFPA 70E standard the safe voltage is below 50V. Based on the studies done, the following is the effect of current:

mA current

Effect on Person

0.5 - 3

Tingling sensations

3+

Shock

10+

Muscle contractions and pain

30+

Respiratory paralysis

60+

Heart Paralysis (may be fatal)

100+

Ventricular fibrillation (usually fatal)

4+ Amps

Heart Paralysis

5+

Amps Tissue and Organs start to burn

Second, the protective equipment - The individual will need at a minimum Class 1 rubber insulating gloves (and leather protectors) and more than likely a HRC 4 garment per NFPA 70E when testing voltage. Thanks to Salisbury for the technical assistance.

Requirements for First Aid Kits in a Non-Industrial Workplace

How does the ANSI standard Z308.1-1998 relate to 29 CFR 1910.151(b)? In a non-industrial workplace (for example, a corporate office) where employees perform administrative duties and there are no specific employment-related injuries anticipated, would a kit matching the ANSI standard be sufficient for compliance with 29 CFR 1910.151(b)?

Paragraph (b) of 29 CFR 1910.151 requires that in the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital near the workplace, a person or persons must be adequately trained to render first aid. Adequate first aid supplies must be readily available. ANSI standards become mandatory OSHA standards only when, and if, they are adopted by OSHA; ANSI Z308.1, Minimum Requirements for Workplace First Aid Kits, was not adopted by OSHA. However, ANSI Z308.1 provides detailed information regarding the requirements for first aid kits; OSHA has often referred employers to ANSI Z308.1 as a source of guidance for the minimum requirements for first aid kits. The contents of the first aid kit listed in ANSI Z308.1 should be adequate for a small worksite. However, larger or multiple operations should consider the need for additional first aid kits, additional types of first aid equipment and first aid supplies in larger quantities. You may wish to consult your local fire and rescue department, an appropriate medical professional, your local OSHA area office or a first aid supplier for assistance in putting together a first aid kit which suits the needs of your workplace. You should also periodically assess your kit, and increase your supplies as needed.

As I See It

It is March 2019, and I am excited! Among the most personally satisfying aspects of what we do is to market, and often design, new products to meet our customers’ needs. Sometimes the needs have been around for a while and the solutions to those needs took time to develop. Sometimes the needs are just becoming apparent in the workplace. However workplace hazards present themselves, Saf-T-Gard International, Inc. is committed to working with customers to understand the hazards and risks and recommend solutions that are safe and effective. Here are a few examples: Customers told us that they wanted performance-based hand protection that was comfortable, flexible and well-fitting while offering proven cut resistance. We heard that customers were often overwhelmed and confused regarding different cut levels in product standards and where the appropriate levels of protection, performance, productivity and product cost all intersect. With that in mind, and an 83-year legacy in superior-quality hand protection, we developed GorillaYarn (specifically for cut-resistant gloves) and introduced new products with and without coatings. Other customers working on or near electrical hazards told us that they wanted dielectric overshoes with deep heels for slip resistance and traction while others wanted dielectric boots with a thermal lining for outdoor work in the cold (the polar vortex was not so long ago). So we partnered with an established quality footwear manufacturer to introduce Skellerup Dielectric Footwear to address these customer needs. What’s your biggest PPE challenge? Consider this an open invitation to challenge us for a solution. Call your Saf-T-Gard representative (or me directly) today and we’ll get started, because we are Saf-T-Gard International - Bringing Workers Home Safely Since 1936.
