Donning and Doffing Disposable Gloves Explained

Many types of workers are now wearing disposable or medical exam gloves to help protect against the spread of COVID-19.

To reduce the risk of exposure to the novel coronavirus, it is important that wearers wash their hands both before and after wear. They must also take care to put on and remove their gloves properly.

Follow Ansell’s donning and doffing best practice tips below.

How to don:

  1. Remove one glove from the box and avoid touching the fingers to reduce contamination risk. Make sure there are no holes or tears.
  2. Most disposable and medical exam gloves can be worn on either hand. If using hand specific gloves, align the glove fingers and thumb with your hand to be sure you are putting the correct glove on the correct hand.
  3. Insert five fingers into the cuff and pull the cuff over the wrist.
  4. Repeat the procedure to don the other glove

How to doff:

  1. Grasp the outside edge of the glove near the wrist.
  2. Peel the glove away from the hand, turning it inside out. Hold it in the opposite gloved hand.
  3. Slide an ungloved finger under the wrist of the remaining glove, being careful not to touch the outside of the glove.
  4. Peel the remaining glove off from the inside, creating a “bag” containing both gloves. Discard the gloves appropriately

Saf-T-Gard has an extensive portfolio of Ansell and Microflex disposable gloves as well as many additional hand protection products, including general purpose gloves, cut-resistant gloves, mechanic’s gloves, chemical-resistant gloves and more. Click here to shop them online, or call customer service at 1-800-548-GARD (4273) today for more information or to place an order.

How to Cut Germs by 60% at the Door

Stopping the spread of COVID-19 is on everyone’s minds. There’s a huge emphasis on sanitizing places we touch frequently, like countertops, light switches, door handles, etc. But most people don’t know infectious contaminants can also be spread by your shoes.

So how can your customers keep from tracking germs and contamination into hygienic areas in the workplace? The NoTrax 353 Boot Wash Station is the solution – it could help reduce bacteria on the floor by 65%!

This is a huge advantage, especially since footwear may unsuspectingly help viruses spread, according to a recent study by the CDC. A research team tested various items within ICU patients’ rooms, such as trash cans, doorknobs, the floor, etc. The study revealed half of the medical teams’ shoes tested positive for COVID-19. But more shocking was the floor in the hospital pharmacy. Though no patients had accessed it, it tested 100% positive for the virus. The CDC concluded at the end of their study that stricter measures should be taken to sanitize footwear.

Additional features and benefits include the following:

  • Cleans and disinfects the bottom of shoes
  • HDPE tray withstands harsh chemicals found in disinfectants – holds 2.5 quarts!
  • Sponge insert absorbs the solution to deliver thorough cleaning of soles
  • Easy to fill and empty tray
  • Applications for use include food processing/manufacturing/packaging plants, laboratories and medical testing, agri-chem/farming, healthcare facilities, emergency response and many others

Q&A

Question - What are the definitions of "flame retardant" and "flame resistant" in regards to apparel covered by paragraph 1910.269(l)(6)(iii) of the electric power generation, transmission, and distribution standard, 29 CFR 1910.269?

Answer - The source of the terms used by OSHA with respect to the paragraph 1910.269(l)(6)(iii) Apparel requirement is the American Society of Testing and Materials Standard, ASTM D 123-93, Standard Terminology Relating to Textiles. This ASTM standard includes the following definitions:

Flame Resistant: The property of a material whereby flaming combustion is prevented, terminated, or inhibited following application of a flaming or nonflaming source of ignition, with or without subsequent removal of the ignition source.

Flame-Retardant-Treated: Having received flame-retardant treatment.

Flame Retardant: This terminology should not be used as an adjective except in the terminology: flame-retardant-treated (or flame-retardant treatment). Used as a noun, "flame retardant" is a chemical used to impart flame resistance.

Note - FR or Flame-Resistant is not the same as arc-rated.

Factoid

Does 29 CFR 1926.417, "Lockout and tagging of circuits," require the use of a lock on de-energized circuits? Title 29 CFR 1926 Subpart K addresses electrical safety requirements in construction work. Section 1926.417 ("Lockout and tagging of circuits") states:

a. Controls - Controls that are to be deactivated during the course of work on energized or de-energized equipment or circuits shall be tagged.

b. Equipment and Circuits - Equipment or circuits that are de-energized shall be rendered inoperative and shall have tags attached at all points where such equipment or circuits can be energized.

In promulgating this section, the Agency used the phrase "rendered inoperative," rather than "locked out." This indicates that methods other than lock-out would be permissible as long as they rendered the equipment or de-energized circuit inoperative. There are a variety of such methods; two examples are:

  1. Removing a fuse or other circuit element for each phase conductor; or
  2. Disconnecting the circuit conductors (including disabling plugs for equipment that is plug-connected)

As I See It

It is May 2020 and we’re still here for you. I won’t go through the time line of the last 2-5 months and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on your company and our company. We know that some of you reading this are working remotely while others are working on-site but with physical distancing, and some may be awaiting a return to work. A friend of mine gently corrected me by using the term “physical distancing” rather than social distancing. We need to stay socially connected, not distant. But back to business. As a multi-generational private business serving essential industries (we consider all of our customers as essential), we have remained in nearly full operation. We have some associates working remotely and some are on temporary leave to deal with child care issues, but we’re still here for you. We still have real people answering the phones and genuinely caring about your safety needs.

And, in support of our experienced team, we have our new website at www.saftgard.com which empowers you to get the information you want and need and place (and trace) your orders quickly and efficiently. Our website is definitely not a replacement for our superb sales, sales support, and customer service teams. Rather, our website was designed to respect your time and desire for accurate, timely, information and transactions. If you haven’t linked your Saf-T-Gard account with our new website yet, let us know and we’ll expedite the process. And if your company or your employer suspended operations due to COVID-19, please know that we are here for you and will be here for you when you resume operations, because we are
