Saf-T-Gard Stops Nearly 40 Tons of Scrap Rubber from Reaching Landfills

Saf-T-Gard’s Voltgard® Test Lab, the largest, independent, NAIL4PET-accredited test lab for rubber insulating electrical safety equipment, demonstrated its ongoing commitment to personal safety by recently preventing 40 tons of out-of-service rubber goods from further polluting landfills. Instead, these scrap rubber products will get to experience a second life by being recycled into playground surfacing material, equestrian arena footing and as rubber filler for hundreds of other applications.

The United States generates more than 250 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) every year according to the latest reports from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Unfortunately, only 34 percent gets recycled, and that rate drops even lower to roughly 26 percent once composting is removed from the equation. This figure is especially concerning considering that 75 percent of America’s waste is recyclable, and if we were to achieve this rate, the effect would be comparable to removing 50 million passenger cars from U.S. roads.

Currently, there are more than 2,000 landfills open in the United States. This presents several serious environmental issues in that not only are the landfills running out of space, but underneath their makeup lay toxins, greenhouse gasses and leachate. Landfills also release chemicals like methane that creep into the ecosystem as the garbage decomposes. These harmful chemicals evaporate into the air and leak into the ground, which pollute our soil and threaten our water supply. Additionally, processing garbage emits carbon, which has been significantly linked to the depletion of the ozone layer and global warming. Moreover, landfills also pose significant financial implications, as it costs $50 per ton on average to send trash to the landfill, whereas it only costs $30 per ton to recycle.

Given the unique properties of rubber materials, the overall use of rubber for a large number of applications is constantly on the rise and becoming an ever-increasing focus of concern. The safety equipment industry is not exempt, as rubber materials are widely used in gloves and other personal protective equipment, most notably rubber insulating gloves, sleeves and blankets utilized by electrical utilities, contractors, telecom companies, municipalities, first responders and industrial facilities.

Regulatory standards require regular inspection and periodic retesting of electrical protective equipment prior to use. Saf-T-Gard is uniquely qualified to service dielectric testing needs while meeting all applicable industry standards with its Voltgard® Test Lab, which is outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment for the complete testing and recertification of rubber gloves, sleeves, blankets, line hose, jumpers, grounding sets, hot sticks and more. The Voltgard® Test Lab collects tons of rubber insulating products that must be removed from service because they are no longer safe to use. In order to help preserve our environment, the company regularly recycles its scrap rubber, thereby helping to sustain the ecosystem and save money.

“Saf-T-Gard strives to keep everyone safe, and that practice extends to the environment as well,” said Richard Rivkin, President and CEO, Saf-T-Gard International. “Our recycling efforts do not stop with the Voltgard® Test Lab. Some of our low-cost knitted work gloves are manufactured from purified, re-spun yarn that consists of recycled textiles from apparel production and recycled plastics from water and soft drink bottles. In our warehouse operations, we also bale our scrap corrugated cardboard to send to a recycler, and we purchase corrugated shipping cartons with a high recycled content. As a family-owned company now in its fourth generation of ownership, we understand the importance of and are very passionate about preventing further landfill pollution for future generations. As part of our legacy, we will continue to implement “greener” business practices that benefit both industrial workers and the environment.”

Get a FREE Wall Cabinet When You Purchase a ZOLL AED Plus® Package from Saf-T-Gard

Did you know that sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) claims a life every two minutes, or that SCA strikes nearly 326,000 people in the U.S. annually? SCA can strike anyone at any time, and it takes more lives each year than breast cancer, lung cancer or AIDS. However, if the availability of timely and appropriate care such as CPR or the use of an AED is increased, survival rates will improve. To further illustrate this point, the average survival rate of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests each year is 7%. If an AED is used by a bystander, the rate increases to 38%.

To help you ensure your facility's 3-5 minute drop-to-shock response time, ZOLL is offering a FREE AED Wall Cabinet ($199 value) when you purchase a ZOLL AED Plus® Package (semi-automatic or fully-automatic) from Saf-T-Gard now through September 30, 2019.

Only ZOLL’s AED Plus® is equipped with Real CPR Help® technology, giving the rescuer real-time feedback on the depth and rate of chest compressions during CPR. The sensor in the pads lets the AED see each chest compression and guides the rescuer, with prompts and a real-time bar gauge, to the recommended depth and rate of compressions.

The ZOLL AED Plus® is available in semi-automatic and fully-automatic versions, and each package includes a ZOLL AED Plus® with an AED cover, an adult electrode pad (CPR-D-padz®), (1) sleeve of lithium 123A batteries, a medical prescription and a soft carrying case.

Additional features and benefits include the following:

  • Real CPR Help® provides unique assistance to rescuers with real-time feedback on CPR compression depth and rate
  • Novel electrode design delivers a five-year shelf life and fits 99% of the population’s chest anatomy
  • Pull-tabs expose the conductive gel on each pad only when it is in direct contact with the skin, limiting the chance of gel contamination
  • CPR-D-padz® meet applicable ANSI/AAMI/ISO DF-39-1993 requirements and offer clear anatomical placement illustrations as well as a CPR hand positioning landmark and comes complete with a rescue accessory package, including a barrier mask, razor, scissors, disposable gloves and a towelette
  • Display screen presents the elapsed time and number of shocks delivered
  • Back-lit display screen provides simultaneous text with every audio prompt and a circle of lighted graphical icons that show what to do

Offer includes the following ZOLL AED Plus® part numbers:

Q&A

Question - Is a material safety data sheet (MSDS) required for a non-hazardous chemical?

Answer - MSDSs that represent non-hazardous chemicals are not covered by the HCS. Paragraph 29 CFR 1910.1200(g)(8) of the standard requires that "the employer shall maintain in the workplace copies of the required MSDSs for each hazardous chemical, and shall ensure that they are readily accessible during each work shift to employees when they are in their work area(s)." OSHA does not require or encourage employers to maintain MSDSs for non-hazardous chemicals. Consequently, an employer is free to discard MSDSs for non-hazardous chemicals.

Respirator Training

"Is training required before a respirator is used?"

Yes, training must be provided to employees who are required to use respirators. The training must be comprehensive, understandable and recur annually (and more often if necessary). This training should include a minimum of the following:

  • Why the respirator is necessary and how improper fit, use, or maintenance can compromise its protective effect
  • Limitations and capabilities of the respirator
  • Effective use in emergency situations
  • How to inspect, put on and remove, use and check the seals
  • Maintenance and storage
  • Recognition of medical signs and symptoms that may limit or prevent effective use
  • General requirements of OSHA's respirator standard, 29 CFR 1910.134

As I See It

It is September 2019. Think about the products you buy and that you use. Think about the value of the products. Think about the worth of the products. Think about the price of the products. There, I got the word "price" out on the table. If something is priceless, what does that mean to you? If something is worthless, what does that mean to you? If something is valueless, what does that mean to you? Many years ago, some highly-educated and expensive consultants predicted that traditional specialty distributors would be put out of business by "disintermediation" (removal of intermediaries in the supply chain). The theory then was that an integrated supply company could reduce costs by streamlining the supply chain and applying the same expertise to delivering safety products as to delivering fasteners or abrasives or plumbing supplies. Today, the same consultants who tried to scare us way back then are now painting a picture of the big bad wolf on some website that refers to the rainforest in Brazil and similar Internet sellers. The Internet is great - I use it for some of my own shopping. But no integrated supply house or Brazilian-rainforest-website.com or big-catalog-little-expertise company can perform an onsite hazard analysis, fit test workers for respirators, calibrate gas detection instrumentation, repair fall protection SRL’s or take the time to understand that workers are not a commodity, so safety products should not be a commodity. Safety products from the cloud are just pie-in-the-sky. Get down to earth results from the safety supplier trusted for 8 decades. We are Saf-T-Gard International - Bringing Workers Home Safely Since 1936.
