Register for this FREE Contractor Qualification (CQ) Webinar Today |
|
|
On Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. EST/ 9:00 a.m. PST, Rob Cowden, Chief Innovation Officer, Safety Plus Inc., is presenting a FREE "Re-Imagining Contractor Qualification: Contractor Management that Ensures Compliance Down to the Employee Level" webinar.
Contractor Qualification (CQ) has been around for some
time. Larger facilities face the paradoxical responsibility of safety
|
|
compliance for employees that are not their own but are performing work on their jobsite. Since it would be near-impossible for owner/operators to implement an all-encompassing safety management program for another company’s employees, CQ programs allow owner/operators to pre-qualify the sub-contractor companies to ensure adequate historical safety records and standards. While most CQ programs
do a decent job in ensuring that sub-contracting companies meet certain metrics of safety during the initial pre-qualification process, they stop short of ensuring only qualified employees are performing tasks on their jobsites. Through the simple application of existing technologies, CQ programs can be improved to track ongoing compliance down to the specific tasks performed by individual employees.
Click here to learn more about CQ programs, and reserve your spot at the webinar!

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and Saf-T-Gard Has the Accuform Signs and Labels to Help Put a Stop to Distracted Driving |
|
|
|
Each
day in the United States, approximately 9 people are killed and more than 1,000
injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver, per the
Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Anything that takes your
attention away from driving is a distraction and you could be seconds away from
a serious car accident.
That's
why every April, the National Safety Council (NSC) hosts a Distracted Driving
Awareness Month to call attention to the dangers of distracted driving.
When
workers are distracted by cellphones, you’re actually putting your company at a
financial risk, per NSC. Without a best practice cell phone policy, you expose
your workers to unnecessary crash risks.
Many employers
have realized the dangers of using cell phones (also a form of multi-tasking)
while driving and are taking action by passing policies to prevent cellphone
distraction. The National Safety Council recommends policies that prohibit both
hands-free and handheld devices.
Per OSHA,
"Employers have a responsibility to protect their workers by prohibiting
texting while driving. It is a violation of the OSH Act for employers to
require workers to text while driving, create incentives that encourage or
condone it, or structure work so that texting while driving is a practical
necessity for workers to carry out their job.
Placing signs in
parking lots is a great way to remind those leaving your business to finish the
call or text before leaving the building, to park when you have to talk or
text, and to not text while driving.
Saf-T-Gard
offers No Texting signs and labels from Accuform in a variety sizes and
materials. Click here for more
information, or call Saf-T-Gard customer service at 1-800-548-GARD (4273)

Food Safety Practices of Restaurant Workers |
|
|
|
Annually, the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that one in six Americans (or 48 million
people) get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die from foodborne
diseases.
As the nation’s second largest private
sector employer – estimated at 14.7 million workers – and with more than 130
million meals sold daily, the restaurant and foodservice industry is committed
to protecting consumers by making significant inroads against foodborne
illness.
|
|
 |
The CDC and FDA commonly cite five factors as leading causes of foodborne illness outbreaks in retail and food service establishments.
Occupational safety can help prevent foodborne illness outbreaks by controlling sanitation and product contamination. Click here to read the findings and recommendations from a recent EHS-Net Study on the food safety practices of restaurant workers.

Q&A
|
 |
|
 |
|
Question - Is it mandatory for all workplaces to
provide a first aid kit?
Answer - Title 29 CFR 1910.151(b) states:
"In the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to
the workplace which is used for treatment of all injured employees, a person or
persons shall be adequately trained to render first aid. Adequate first aid
supplies shall be readily available." Employers may elect not to provide
first aid services if all such services will be provided by a hospital,
infirmary, or clinic in near proximity to the workplace. If the employer has
persons who are trained in first aid, then adequate first aid supplies must be
readily available for use. Therefore, employers are required to provide first
aid supplies that are most appropriate to respond to incidents at their
workplaces. OSHA allows employers to provide first aid supplies specific to the
needs of their workplace.

Saf-T-Gard Spotlight |
|

|
|
Jack Walker is Saf-T-Gard’s Key Accounts Safety Specialist, and he joined the company in March 2017.
What Jack likes about Saf-T-Gard:
“I really enjoy all of my co-workers. Everyone has a great deal of knowledge and experience and are experts at their crafts. No matter what needs to get done, everyone joins together in a team effort to make sure that our customer’s needs are met well above their expectations. Being new to the company, I was welcomed with open arms from everyone. There have been many individuals who have gone above and beyond their duties to make sure that I am comfortable and well taken care of.”
What makes Jack’s day:
"The thing that really makes my day is when we are able to solve a customer’s problem. Whether that is big or small, helping keep our customers safe and happy is what we are all about. Most of the times that is working with many internal business partners to make that happen. Oh, and a good cup of coffee, or two……"
Jack’s outside interests:
"There is nothing better after a long day of work then heading home to see my wife and three children. Stephanie is my wife, we have been married for more than 6 years and have been together for more than 11 years. Our children are: Charlie (4), Ben (2) and Molly (1). We live in Naperville, IL. We spend a lot of time together and with our family. Outside
of family time, I love sports, particularly baseball. After I was done playing baseball, I began my coaching journey back in 2011. Currently, I am an assistant baseball coach at Benedictine University in Lisle, IL. My primary focus is working with infielders and hitters. I am also the first base coach. As much as I loved to play and compete, there is nothing better than watching an individual or your team succeed after putting in many hours of work."

Factoid |

|
|
Employees at times perform various tasks on construction equipment
being used at a construction site, such as checking fluid levels. At times this
work is done while the employee is on the vehicle at heights over more than 6
feet. Do any OSHA construction standards require fall protection for employees
who are on construction equipment, such as excavators, dump trucks, and
bulldozers at heights in excess of 6 feet?
The OSHA standards for fall protection in 29 CFR 1926 Subpart M do
not apply in this situation because Subpart M explicitly excludes vehicles. 29
CFR 1926.501(b)(1) states: Each employee on a walking/working surface
(horizontal and vertical surface) with an unprotected side or edge which is 6
feet (1.8 m) or more above a lower level shall be protected from falling by the
use of guardrail systems, safety net systems, or personal fall arrest systems.
The phrase "walking/working surface" is defined at 29 CFR
1926.500(b)(2) as: Any surface, whether horizontal or vertical on which an
employee walks or works, including, but not limited to, floors, roofs, ramps,
bridges, runways, formwork and concrete reinforcing steel but not including
ladders, vehicles, or trailers, on which employees must be located in
order to perform their job duties. [Emphasis added]. Therefore, Subpart M does
not require fall protection for an employee who is on a vehicle in order to perform
his or her job duties because 1926.500(b)(2) expressly excludes vehicles from
the definition of "walking/working surface."

As I See It |
|

|
|
It is April 2018. April 22
is Earth Day 2018. So this month I would like to share some of our
environmentally-conscious programs and policies. Maybe some of them will also
make sense to you. Let’s start with paper – or lack of it if possible. More and
more of our customers are accepting order acknowledgements and invoices by
e-mail. Did you know that Saf-T-Gard is also fully EDI-capable? By sending orders and
shipping documents electronically, we all save on paper and handling. Speaking
of paper, like many companies we do generate some paper. We use a local
document destruction firm that not only shreds and destroys our unneeded paper,
but then supplies the resulting material to a paper recycler saving countless
trees. And for a “feel good” moment, the local document destruction firm is
operated by a sheltered workshop. Our high-voltage electrical test lab
generates tons of scrap rubber in the form of rubber gloves, sleeves, blankets,
and similar protective equipment that have reached the end of their useful (and
safe) lives. Once these customer-owned goods are released to us for disposal,
we send truck-loads to a rubber recycler to be reprocessed into shoe soles,
playground matting, asphalt filler, and similar materials. And some of the
yarns used in some basic knitted work gloves were originally derived from
reprocessing plastic soft drink and water bottles. We’re proud of our ongoing commitment to be a good corporate citizen, because we are Saf-T-Gard International - Bringing Workers Home Safely Since 1936.
