Ergonomics
From an OSHA perspective, ergonomics is the process of designing the job to fit the employee with the overall goal of eliminating musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) - the soft tissue, muscle and tendon or postural injuries or illnesses that can result from repetitive motions and overuse. Examples of these include carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, trigger finger, other muscle strains and lower-back injuries.
Work-related MSDs are preventable. However, while employers are responsible for providing a safe workplace for their employees, work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) remain a significant cause of time off-the-job in numerous industries. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in 2013, MSD cases accounted for 33% of all worker injury and illness cases.
