Hearing Protection

Work-related hearing loss continues to be a critical workplace safety and health issue. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the occupational safety and health community named hearing loss one of the 21 priority areas for research. According to OSHA, excessive noise levels are a serious and pervasive occupational health problem, often created by industrial processes. High-level noise exposure can cause temporary or permanent hearing damage. The two factors that determine the extent of damage include: (1) The intensity of the noise, and (2) The duration of exposure. Noise-induced hearing loss is 100 percent preventable but once acquired, hearing loss is both permanent and irreversible. Therefore, preventative measures must be taken by employers and workers to ensure the protection of workers' hearing. Employers are required by OSHA to provide hearing protectors when Time-Weighted Average (TWA) noise levels equal or exceed 85 dB for an 8-hour period of time.
